daytona
hi guys
I am from the uk,there is meant to be a waiting list for ss Daytona , APPROX 2 YR WAIT ...... I got MY black dial September 12,,,,, and the white dial april 13, each time the dealer saying the people in front of me,, had declined watch, again this month another dealer has called to say , another ss is available............each time I was told 2 yr wait and you can go on the list , ...........I waited 3 months for my black ss and 2 months for the white ss............ IT SEEMS THE DAYTONA AS LOST ITS APPEAL ........AND THE AD SEEM AWASH WITH MODELS................IS THIS WHY THERE HAS BEEN NO INCREASE FOR 12 MONTHS. IS THIS HAPPENING IN OTHER COUNTRIES. |

My local AD does not work on waiting lists. He puts it in the window and it sells usually within 7 days without fail. I got my Black SS Daytona from him and I saw a white one in the window 2 months ago and it was sold within 3 days (I asked when I got my YG Daytona). He says a lot of people drop their names at every AD while on holiday but never show up or follow through so about 3 years ago, they stopped taking names. He said he would rather sell to a local person anyway as there is a chance he will come back as a repeat customer (like me lol).
Anyway, if it's true about punters putting their name down just for the hell of it then it makes sense that you will get a call. Like it or not but you have just added to this statistic. How many other AD's have you put your name down at? Don't be surprised if you get more calls... |

It's just hype. UK AD's are the worst at attempting to tell you how scarce certain models are.
Some would still attempt to have you believe even Submariners are a rare thing. |

It was hard to get when rolex depended on zenith for movements, since the in house 4130 has been introduced, it is all fiction & hype.

The Daytona is not a hard watch to get at all. AD's just don't put them in the window. It took me 3 phone calls to get one. If you have the cash and willing to buy now you will be surprised how many people ahead of you on that list have suddenly "cancelled" and a watch has become available. A lot of AD's in the UK still talk about this 2 year myth. As always cash is king.

It was hard to get before the world economy plummeted for most people. That's why they are working their way down the waiting lists. Wonder why sometime people seem to dismiss that. It's the same for all luxury goods whether cars, clothes, watches.....

My local AD's hold a waiting list, mostly because they are not allocated many and have convinced everyone they are still hard to get. One sales guy actually told me unless I've purchased from them in the recent past I would not be included on a waiting list. I left before laughing out loud.

I never found a local AD that was nice enough not to basically insult me every time I asked about buying one. I didn't know I could have bought one here from a trusted seller. I got mine on eBay for over retail. I love the watch and do not care about how "rare" it is or isn't anymore.

I can totally imagine one of these store assistants telling you that crap. I would have laughed out loud whilst in the store at the person, so you're a bigger person than me for just leaving. |

Patek are worse they think that you are privileged to even buy one of their watches and if you havnt bought before you can't have certain models - then start calling you up when you don't buy from them - cretinous behavior I do not like.

SS Daytona is much easier to get, I was offered a 2nd SS Daytona at my favorite AD but decided not to buy it.

My local AD offered me 2 SS Daytonas in the past 6 mo.
They are not rare by any means. Don't even think collectible. They are very popular and fly off the shelf fast. Not made in large numbers. Remember. All other Rolex models updated their stock ( sub, GMT, exp..) except the daytona who is carrying last century model for astronomical price. That's why demand is less on this unmistakably iconic aged watch. |

My ADs don't display them, only the really out of price range Daytona models. Since I live in Korea the stock isn't as updated and sometimes there is only black or white. One AD told me I could go on a waiting list for 6 months with a 100 dollar deposit. I was browsing the other AD as he had just updated his store and he waited for other clients to leave and showed me the ss black from display in window and pulled a just arrived ss white still in Swiss airmail box and small case. Basically, they don't want to waste time with browsers and you have to ask and have some kind of relationship, otherwise they can always sell them, if they have them.
In the past he pulled a hulk from the back that wasn't being displayed when I was looking for it and gave me a brand new 16622 when there was water condensation on platinum dial that twice the RSC in Korea couldn't fix. My wife went off on him and he brought out a new one and ate the old one. Sometimes, if you establish a relationship with ADs in non US countries (particularly relationship oriented countries) you can get much better treatment than if in US. |

The SS daytonas from 90s to current day (16520/116520) are neither collectible nor rare nor hard to acquire - if anyone tells you otherwise then they are very mistaken or lying to you.

It really depends on where you are. Trying to get one in the bay area or LA is pretty much impossible. I walk in to ADs weekly just to browser around and they all say they are still pretty hard to get. I called a chain of ADs on the east coast and they looked in the system had one and shipped it to me.
Still not as easy to get as other SS models but if you look around you could probably find one. |
