How often must a watch be worn at least?

Recently, I was having coffee break with a group of Wiser friends and one of the collector mentioned that all mechanical watches, whether Rolex or any other brands should be worn at least twice a month. That is to keep the watch mechanism running smoothly and to prevent the lubricants inside from drying up. He also recommends watch winders for those with a large collection.

I am just wondering if there is any truth in that? As my collection grows, some of my watches don't get much wrist time anymore but so far they have always been working perfectly when I eventually want to wear them and wind them up.

I'm not a big fan of watch winders. I will take all my watches out about every two weeks and give them a full wind. That will keep the mech from gumming up. Anymore than that is just adding unnecessary wear.

All any watch needs if stored for longer than say a month is just a small manual wind every month or so just to start the movement. There is no need for a watchwinder for any watch, and no point in putting extra wear on any movement running 24/7 on a machine if its not needed to tell the time on the wrist.

Not that I have a large collection by any means but I do take out what I have once a month and give each one a full wind. Then it's back into the Oakley case till next month. One other thing that I do though is switch the storage position for the month. One month crown up, one month crown down. Don't know if it makes any difference but I'm weird like that.

Modern wristwatches have very good lubricants nowadays that they rarely dry up or gum hence why you don't really need a winder (unless you want to purposely keep it running e.g. a perpetual calendar). So, I wouldn't worry too much about that. Still every now and then, give them a good wind!

I am like Cop I change the position of my watches once a month and wide them also. Not sure if it does anything but makes me feel better!
