Why take a chance of damaging it?

Unless your AD is a Rolex Boutique with a service center/technician on-site, then that's sounds about right, bud.

I have an awesome Jumbo Tudor D-D that I bought for very little. 17 of the local watchmakers in my area have tried to get the back off (needs minor repair/service). No luck. I think it was one of the years that the gaskets had a tendency to turn to epoxy. Not Rolex gaskets, at the time, Omegas were known for that. I think someone put a convenient gasket in my watch and now I think I'm going to have to use a torch to loosen it. Anyone have other suggestions? To date, we've tried all the various case openers, cutting oil, penetration oil, freezing, etc. The only thing left is the torch, which I have hesitated to use because it's likely the crystal will melt and possibly horse up the dial, even with the watch inverted.

Any reason you want to get it checked? Typically, if my car runs like a champ, I dont ask the mechanic to look under the hood for fun.

Why have a business if you can't service your clients locally instead of having to send the product off for weeks to tibucktu?

Sounds like you went to an AD and not an ASC. (authorized service center)... dealers deal and service centers service.
Try and have your IPad fixed at an Apple store..I would rather they send it away to someone who specializes in service and not high pressure sales.

Ask the clerk in electronics dept at Target to take apart your Canon camera and see how that works out.

Any watchmaker can unscrew the caseback if that's all you want.. Does your Dealer have a watchmaker on staff ??

Asking to do so "just because" is asking the Dealer to incur costs in labor and parts and a pressure check to ensure it's still watertight...

I guess service centers are the only places where they are comfy working on a Rolex.

Hey Dallas isn't Tibucktu. lol Your in Texas!

But Seriously, just take it to a local Jeweler if your worried about anything. Preferably one that knows how to service Rolex Watches.

It's more likely down to weather they have the technician and tools to do it and pressure check it afterwards. If they don't then they likely not allowed to.

Is there a way to tell for sure without cracking the case back off?

How about sending it to the service center, which apparently is in your own state.
Who did you buy the watch from, a trusted and reputable seller, or a guy on the street with a trenchcoat? Strange to be asking after buying the watch whether it's authentic or not, and not doing your research first. Put yourself in that AD's position...Imagine opening up watches for every Joe off the street who walked in going "Hey, I think maybe I bought a fake Rolex, can you open it up for me?" Were you expecting to pay for this service? All this especially when they may (since you haven't explained in full) well be just a jewelry store authorized to sell Rolex watches, and not have a Rolex technician on site. I makes perfect sense for them to tell you to send it to the service center, or offer to do so for you.

Then I understand but that should have been done per-purschase.

When I buy used Rolexes with no known service history, I generally send to RSC first so I can have total peace of mind, and papers if that matters to you. You can always decline the service and pay 40 bucks for them to just ship it back to you. I think RSC Dallas may be worth considering for you.

Most AD's don't and they are retails stores not service centers.
