Hong Kong service center's service
I have always heard that the HK Rolex service center was famous for good prices and flexibility. My experience found a good price but no flexibility.
My father died suddenly last April and one of the keepsakes I took with me was his DJ. This DJ was given to him by the company he worked for on his 25th anniversary (some 19 years ago). The case-back was inscribed with his name, service award and a special emblem in the center. Dad wore that watch every day (whether mixing concrete, working in his wood shop or swimming). It stopped working one day in 2000. It turns out that these things need service once in a while. Anyway, he never did pay to get it up and running again. I took it into the HK Rolex service center on Jan 2nd and yesterday they provided me with an estimate for repair. The cost was not nearly as high as I'd anticipated but they did tell me that I'd have to replace the case-back. This was not problem but I asked that they give me back the old one so that I could get the new case-back re-inscribed. I was told that there was no way I could keep the old case-back... not even for obvious sentimental reasons. Suffice it to say that I had to decline the case-back replacement. The whole ordeal seems silly to me. On a positive note, I'll be able to have the watch back in good working order when I meet my mom in HK next month. |

It doesn't make sense that they would force the caseback to be changed only because of the inscription unless there is something actually wrong with the current caseback.
My suggestion is to buy an appropriate caseback off of fleabay, have a watchmaker take the old one off and put your "new" one on and then send it back. |

Why don't you take a high quality picture of the case back and then have it re-inscribed? It doesn't sound like you want the actual case back, just the inscription...Right?

Why you have to deal with RSC. You can alway get it fix with any professional watch repairman.

They simply said that the case-back was not sealing properly.
I could take a photo of the inscription but the original case back has sentimental value to me and it's important that I have it. I've always heard that the HK service center was more flexible than the rest of the RSC's and since HK is only an hour flight away... Anyway, I'll probably buy another case back off ebay and have it installed by a local watch repair. |
