What does it mean if a Rolex has a random serial number? Thanks in advance.

What is the significance of a letter designation? Plain and simple, if the watch has a random serial, does this affect the watches value?

Indicates an approximate time period in which the watch was produced.

The next series of serial numbers after the "M", "V", and "G" is a random serial number. The new random serial numbers begins with a number, and has 8 digits including a letter in any part of the serial number. The older serial numbers have a letter first, followed by 6 numbers.

With the new random serial numbers, you will no longer be able to tell what year the watch was made.

I just bought a brand-new G serial. It doesn't effect the pricing in the slightest. Very few changes have ever been made to the Submariner line, like the M serials having inscribed rehaults, that kind of stuff. There is no difference between the random serials and the G serials.

If it starts with a letter followed by 6 numbers, 7 characters total, it is a serial number.
If it has 8 characters it is a random identification number - nothing serial about it. Serial numbers are serial - 2 follows 1.
