Thought of the day...
We all enjoy owning Rolex watches, but with talks of new movements, bezels, and case sizes should we start looking backwards at the older models?
What I am trying to get at is, new Rolexs are VERY easy to find and purchase. Rather than paying $6000 for a GMTc should we as collectors look to pick up a pre-owned 1990-2003 "Pepsi" & Sub for $6000, buy 2 watches for the same $? I feel that pre-owned Rolexs are going to be harder to find, especially after recent info about the ceramic bezels, chapter ring, polished center links and dial changes. I for one would would rather have 2 more Rolex watches to enjoy than just one. My

I would say it depends on your taste. I am not a fan of some of the new updates by Rolex, and if I were a collector (which I am not), cetainly I would do as you suggest. I tend to like certain models and stick with it (SD at this time) and wear just one watch for any period of time, and therefor may flip my Sub Date.

I agree. For the cost of a new Sub from an AD, I can have a 14060M and an older DJ, Explorer I, AK, etc.

I can see why some are attracted to preowned watches, but for me I prefer buying new. I like knowing that I'm the only one who has used the watch and that it's been cared for the right way. That said, I would buy used if the piece was in good condition, say an older GMT or Sub. For the most part, though, it's new for me.

And who will be the first one to give advice about using AD always when buying a Rolex?

I tend to be a one watch person and buy watches based on what I think I need at the time. My last purchase was my GMT II-c which I fell in love with because it met all the feature and style requirements I decided I needed; a gmt feature, a date I could read, the ability to wear it dressed up or dressed down, and something that would appeal to my sense of aesthetics.
Problem is, I tend to get enter into phases where I start collecting and I am trying my best not to add Rolex watches to the list!!!! TRF ain't helping a bit! |

Sensible thoughts, Greg!
And besides saving some money on buying "vintage", you also get the bonus of them increasing in value every day.

I recently discovered that in Belgrade we have GREAT market for vintage watches!
I bought some Tudors that I like very much for a half of a price of new SS Sub. So I agree with Greg and Dan,MORE IS MORE!!! |

Thanks guys... I can appreciate the thrill of owning a new watch that is flawless with no wear marks.... but there is something about a watch that has history and will not be as common as a new watch with a saphire crystal.
I understand if you are not into owning several watches... like many here are on the forum. I for one like to rotate through my watches, sometimes switching 2 or 3 times a day depending on what I am doing. So the more the better! Many vintage Rolexs (i.e. DJ, AK) can be purchased for under $2000. Sometimes under $1000, depending on condition and buyers financial situation. In the end, to each there own. If I were to sell all my watches (OH NO!) than I think my ONE Rolex would be a GMTc II. Thanks again!
