Guess who is back in Rolex magazine ad?

I was flipping through the latest Architectural Digest yesterday at my mother-in-law's house...the (obligatory) Rolex ad is a montage of photos of famous people who wear/wore a Rolex, e.g. Winston Churchill, Martin Scorsese, Roger Federer, and...Tiger Woods.

I guess Tiger's days of being poison to sponsors is over?

Presumably Rolex has done some focus group testing. Anyway, I thought it was interesting.

Yeah, I saw that one with the caption "He's Back!"...

Yes because Woods makes me want to buy anything.

They need some real sponsors

How is that ad anywhere remotely reflective of rolex? Rolex is not "back", it never left!

It is part of the "Why this Watch?" campaign that started with TV ads a short while ago -

Seen this ad as well. No Newman? No McQueen?

I think they rotate the photos. The one I saw had Tiger in the upper-left area, Churchill in the middle, and no Ike. I think it was a different photo of Federer, too.

Tiger Woods was never a Rolex ambassador until Tag dumped him after his indiscretion became headline news and Rolex signed him on a little while back for the first time as far as I know. So he was not "back" in the Rolex ad since this is his first run representing Rolex.
It is in bad taste of Rolex to put someone of Tiger Wood's reputation in the same rank as sir Winston Churchill IMHO.

Forgive me but I thought Tiger Woods originally signed to the Rolex family when he first started...I believe his first endorsement might have been with Tudor hence the Tudor Tiger? I also find it humorous how we judge anyone not on their talents but their personal lives. Many of our Great Leaders also committed adultery..I don't see JFK being held accountable for his indiscretion with Marilyn Monroe...

i have no problem with rolex hiring tiger again (tudor in the 90's).

i admire all on the personalities in the ad, don't care about any of their personal faults, and still love rolex/tudor.

Doesn't bother me at all. I don't buy things because of who companies hire as their sponser...

Tiger was with Tudor when he first turned pro - before he signed with Tag. But in any event, Tiger being with Rolex isn't news. Anyone who watches golf has probably seen the TV ad of him with the PT DD walking through the museum over the last couple of months.

Woods signed with Rolex at least as far back as late 2011.

Not a fan of tiger at all. Blames everyone else (caddy, swing coach, etc...) but himself. When did he last win a major? What place did he finish this past weekend? Not impressed that Rolex endorses him. BTW...I don't buy items just b/c someone else endorses/wears them. Engineering and quality is what sells me on a product.

How can you not be a fan of Tiger Woods?

"Woods has won 79 official PGA Tour events, second only to Sam Snead, and six ahead of Jack Nicklaus with 73 wins".

I admire his ability to hit a golf ball, but I'm not a fan of the man. If it's down to Phil and Tiger on Sunday, I'm rooting for Phil.

I find it interesting that Winston Churchill chose to wear a Rolex. I do not find it interesting that Tiger Woods, Roger Federer, et al, are paid to wear one.

Winston Churchhill received his engraved Rolex as a token of appreciation for his leadership during WWII.

Right, but he chose to wear it as opposed to being paid by the company to wear its products. Same with General Eisenhower.

It does seem like rolex is doing the endorsing in this case. Maybe i am just biased because I dislike ALL paid celebrity endorsements.

Tiger is a Rolex ambassador because of his golfing ability that's all. Like some already stated most of the ambassadors all have private lives that are less the perfect . Rolex uses high profile men and women because of their achievements period.

Churchill didn't choose Rolex, Rolex chose Churchill.

His image is not in the one I posted, but the pictures are in rotation so Churchill will appear based on the demographics of the target audience for the print campaign. Quite clever.

And before we jump on anyone for accepting the offer to be an ambassador, or to simply endorse by accepting a free product, isn't that the first professional human activity recorded?

I mean Eve really "sold" Adam on Apple long before Jobs came along...

As a huge golf fan and former collegiate golfer, I love that Rolex went out and got the best athlete of the last 20 years. Rolex stands for greatness and in the golf world, and has been quite possibly the biggest player in terms of sponsorship on the PGA/European tours. For Rolex to finally get it right and bring Tiger Woods back on board is perfect in my mind. Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, Seve Ballesteros, and Lee Trevino all wore Rolex and despite his shortcomings off the golf course, his legendary status is a "must have" for the most recognizable global watch brand!

I sure as hell don't approve of his mistakes, but his Legend status and marketability is undeniable.
