Watch as a gift? Good or bad?

Some people here have mentioned giving or getting watches as gifts. To the people here a watch is such a personal choice and such a big commitment. Would you want someone to pick your next watch out for you? How would you feel if you had to put your TT Submariner or you Daytona back in the box because your new mother-in-law just bought you a nice SS Air King? How about giving one? If you gave your father/son/brother/wife, etc. a nice new Rolex and when you saw them, they weren't wearing it, would it bother you?

Difficult one, personally I would prefer to choose myself, a watch is very personal. But if someone bought me one as a gift I would treasure it and wear it in rotation.

When I give a gift, it is theirs and they can do what they want and I never give it a nevermind. Now, when I get a gift, lets say for fun a Rolex from my wife at Christmas, I will enjoy it no matter what other Rolexs I have. Even a YM II.

My wife and I talked about this very issue yesterday as we were at the AD and I saw a young woman buying a Rolex for her fiance. The problem was that he paid list and didn't even ask for a discount.

I would have no problems with my wife wanting to buy me a watch. But it would hurt if I knew that she didn't get a good deal on it. She's not into negotiating, so . . . .

I bought my wife a watch as a gift, but I made sure to get one that she had said she really liked.

I also prefer buying my watches myself. Also because I like to inspect them before buying them.

I bought a watch for my girlfriend for Christmas, and she was very happy. It was one of the more expensive Citizen Eco Drives, not a mechanical, but she loved it and it looks great on her. I wanted to test the waters with the Citizen first because she's not into watches like me, but I'd definitely get her something nicer in the future, though I think the Citizen is a great little piece.

The same way I would not allow anybody to pick a wife for me, I don't like the idea of anybody picking a watch for me, unless that person knows exactly what I want. And watches are the only thing I consider a gift, the rest is necessity.

Watches are a very personal posession for some of us..

All of my daughters have several watches....all given as gifts from me.

Their husbands refuse to get them watches because they say that they can't compete....

But each of them knows that they probably could not get a watch for me as I have specific criteria..

My wife, on the other hand, got me a very nice Speedy Patch this past Christmas, it will see some serious wrist time, and she usually wears the Ladies DJ I got for her a couple of years ago....So, bottom line; the better you know the recipient, their likes, dislikes, and the depth of your pocket book...a watch is one of the ultimate and most personal gifts you could ever give...

My wife likes to go with me to look at watches at the AD. She knows exactly what I like and what I don't. She bought me my Datejust as an engagement gift. She special ordered the exact watch that I would have picked myself. I love the fact that she gave it to me as a gift because I think of her every time I look at it. I would not trade that feeling for anything. It is much more "valuable" to me then if I had just bought it myself.

I would want to pick for me. It is not that I would be un appreciative of the gift, but I would not want to cause offence or feel the need to wear it. A watch is a very personnel thing.

I got my watch as a wedding gift, but my wife knew exactly what I wanted and also brought me along to pick it out and inspect it. I think with a substantial and personal gift like a Rolex, that's the better practice. Personally, if I gave someone a Rolex and he/she didn't wear it at all, I'd be a bit bothered. I like giving gifts that people truly will enjoy and use.

I think that giving or recieving a watch as a gift is fine if done in a way that includes the person receiving the gift in the selection process.

My wife bought mine for me as an anniversary gift. The guys at the AD know me and what I like so they helped her to buy the perfect watch for me.
I hate to say it but if anyone was to buy me a cheap watch I'd be pretty uncomfortable because there's not much chance I'd ever wear it.

It would depend on the person. My husband would (I think) love whatever Rolex model I gave him. However, if I was giving one of you picky-picky guys a watch - I'd probably let you pick it out yourself!!

I feel sorry for anyone that has to buy me a gift. I'm pretty particular about most everything that I wear or use, and if something isn't just right, I tend to disfavor it. I'm also neurotic about not keeping things around that I don't use. I try to love everything I recieve as a gift, but we all have our primal nature.

Which is why I always tell people to get me books. I rarely meet a book I don't love!

Somewhat
