I think an expert could buff that out, but it aint easy or possible for the average Joe to do.

What is the cost of a new crystal?

Well since the crystals are so *thick* on this model - see pix below - just buff it. Pointless and a waste of cash to replace.

Before you make this purchase, will it bother you later on, knowing the watch no longer has the original crystal? Are you saving that much for all the trouble?

I was quoted 200 for an authentic rolex crystal fore, but that was for a sub. Not sure of the price is different on a dssd

Don't know much, but the DS is going to cost more than a sub.

If you have a RSC do the work, they are going to pressure test it. I believe it still has to be sent out for this thus more$. This is to replace the crystal.

Most of the RSCs now have the equipment to test the DSSD to its rated depth.

the Bay? I thought about buying that but the scratch is what detered me. It made me wonder what sort of impact the crystal took as it's hard to gouge a sapphire that badly without quite a bit of pressure...at least from my experience. I've banged (what I consider hardly) sapphire crystal Breitlings on hard surfaces and never had even a single scratch. The edge of my 16600 has a very small chip, but that's at a very sharp corner where the glass sits high off the bezel. Just my $0.02

Is the crystal scratched or is the AR coating just scuffed?

Might be easier to clean up than you realize...

Ask the seller to time it for a day. If within COSC then it is a go, predicated on the price reflecting a crystal replacement. No need to replace the crystal, pay the cash, hope for a factory pressure rating (to be honest no one will ever dive that deep wearing it...so give that what it is worth..). This is a chance to own that watch for a nice discount. Given the proportions of that case - be assured that you will knock it on something if you wear it daily and dive more than a desk....This situation is much better than a deep kang in the case. Worry not about the posts about it being "hit so hard". Dropping any mechanical watch onto a hard surface will raise more concern that simply having the crystal scraped up. One more thing - sapphire watch crystals are not as bulletproof against scratches and scraps as one might believe...buy the watch, save the cash. Wear it like you stole it.

You could buff that out using a glass polish like jewellers rouge or similar and a drill. I bet it would make it more respectable to look at.

If this helps I dropped my DS when I had one, in the shower from 5 feet on to tile floor. The watch landed lens down, so I think it landed on the lens. Not a mark on it, but it had to go in for reg. timing went way off. I talked to rolex then and they sent it to Penn rsc because they told me that where the special chamber was to test WR. They made it sound not every center is going to have one. They are very expensive and one service in the U.S enough for how many DS are sold.

The crystal is 5mm thick, but I'd worry more about some bafon trying to buff it out and putting too much vibrations on the watch and somehow messing up the movement.

It seems like you are trying to get a bargain DSSD. Personally, I'm suspect against shortcuts in life, you are better off dropping some additional cash, e.g. here on TRF sellers, and getting the real thing that will serve you without worries for many years to come.
