Exciting time to buy a new Rolex!

I still haven't purchased one yet and I have only been a member here for a week or so. I've lurked for a while and done research for quite some time.

I have always wanted a Rolex because of the classic shape and reputation and of course nothing else is a Rolex. I must say that even still I have never purchased one mainly because I found the designs quite plain.

Now don't get me wrong, the Rolex design is what makes them famous and the main reason to want one. Lets see if I can put this into words.... The 1957 Chevy is a beautiful classic automobile, one of the all time greats. Its shape is instantly recognizable to almost anyone. One of the things that makes it such a classic is the fact that you can't go buy one today. If I could go to Chevy dealer and buy a new one that looked and drove pretty much the same as it did in 1957 then they would be a dime a dozen and I'm sure it would not be the icon that it is today.

One of the main reasons why Rolex is still so popular is that the design has changed little in 50 years. Why mess with a classic design? The black Sub is a true classic that evokes the image of a handsome secret agent, or the striking businessman ready to topple Wall Street. Let me come right out and say that I love that watch and it is on my list of watches to own before I die.

But a watch is a personal statement and I have always wanted something a little different. I know the basic designs have evolved slightly over the years and a true antique watch can be quite different than today's models. I am drawn to the Pepsi GMT because it is still a timeless classic design but it has the playful splash of color that you either love or hate.

I think the popularity of the green bezel anniversary Sub is an indicator that new models are needed to inject something new.

I was excited to see the new models added last year and I was especially happy to see the new GMTc. This is exactly what I am talking about. Take a true classic and make just a few minor "improvements". To the Rolex purist I am sure these changes are like a sin against nature, but to me they give me the opportunity to own something new and unique.

OK Starting to ramble now so I will stop. I truly cannot wait to see what is in store for April. I am hoping that when (if?) I see the new GMTIIc Pepsi model (or maybe Coke?!) that I will see my new watch!

Welcome.

Never owned one huh? You want brand spanking new revision? Then wait. Whatever floats your boat. You want a trendy modern watch befitting the modern secret agent? Get an Omega PO. Daniel Craig wears one, he calls it Omeega.

This boring? Uh-huh....

I actually don't like the new Omeega, although Daniel Craig is a much better Bond than the last few guys. Boring? Now did I ever say Boring? Of course not!

PS Does that Sub have the laser or detonator in it?

The new direction that Rolex seems to be taking seems to follow the recent trends. I personally don't care for the updates and I think they are pretty drastic. IMO, only the parachrom hairspring (but actually my SD is more accurate than my GMT IIc) and the bracelet/clasp are actual improvements.

All in all, I definitely like the old cosmetic much more, but it is all subjective and personal.

"PS Does that Sub have the laser or detonator in it?"

Yes, there's a laser etching of the crown at 6:00. Shine a flashlight at an angle and you'll see it.

Again if the new models excite you, get the one you want. In general people on this forum can't wait to see what the suspected new models may look like, but we're equally passionate about the "older" models.

Enjoy your stay!

Agreed. The black SMP stomps it.

Does Omega still make the Sea-Master with sword hands? I tried to find it on Omega's homepage, but couldn't find it.

Anyway, welcome to our new member. I hope you get a Rolex (or other nice watch) soon!

Welcome to TRF!
And few words about watch design...
I got few watches from 1970.`s,one of them is Seiko 5 with square case. That watch,in years when it`s produced, was consider as modern and pretty ellegant timepiece, altought it was never expensive. But what was selling it very good at the time was it`s "modern" design! Now,some thirty years later,it`s design looks like a piece of crap!Same thing about Rado`s "revolution" in design,Breitling`s first experiments with analog-digital quartz(Navitimer Pluton 2100)...
What I`m trying to say is that THERE`S NO DESIGN AS CLASSIC DESIGN!
And Rolex is perfect example.Omega Speedmaster Professional too.
Of course,if you are interested in something else, you have a lot of choice(Zenith`s new line, for example)...And Rolex start producing new line of Tudor watches that looks VERY different that anything either Rolex or Tudor ever produced...
