Advice on watch purcahse 5712R, 5980R, 5712R, AP ROO 29540
Hi Guys,
I just returned from Zurich and tried a bunch of amazing watches. Here is my short list of favourites: 5980/1R 75,000 CHF (£51,500) 5980R 52,700 CHF (£36,000) 5712R 38,400 CHF (£26,000) - Rose Gold ROO Schumacher 72,000 CHF (£49,000) Although I went to a few AD the discounts being offer were horrible so I couldnt do a deal. My favourite watch hands down is the 5980R, but my wife felt that the all gold braclet was too much of a statement and I rhink ahe is right. It also sat outside my budget ao I needes to get one 30% off which would prove very difficult given how new it was. She then made what I think is a good suggestion. By looking at the big price difference between the Chrono on leather strap (5980R) and the moon phase power reserve (5712R), then factoring in a good discount, maybe I should consider two watches. For example the 5712R and the ROO Rose Gold 25940 (older model with round push buttons). This way I have a nice watch to wear with a suit and another casual watch. So may I please ask a few questions: - Is the Patek 5980R a far superior time piece (in terms or retaining value, rarity, complication and watch appeal) over the 5712R? - Would you prefer to have the two watches above over the 5980R? - What would be considered a great deal on 5712R new and preowned? - I know this is the patek forum but What would be considered a great deal on the discontinued AP ROO 25940 new and preowned? Your advice and guidance is much appreciated. |

You cannot go wrong with any of these excellent references. My preference in order of most desirable to least is:
1. 5980 1R 2. 5980r 3. Gold AP MS 4. Other I currently own the 5980r and thinking of also getting 5980 1R as I like it so much. |

I think your wife is a very wise woman. 5712R and 25940 together are a great combination. I would personally get the 5712 in SS cause the bracelet on the Nautilus is exceptional. But any way you get it, if you ask me, I would prefer the two watches over the 5980. (Please note that I am not a great fan of the 5980 because I feel the balance of the watch is lost because of the pushers)

The 5980/1r is a beautiful watch, especially with that gorgeous nautilus bracelet. However, I wouldn't buy it myself because it would be too flashy for my age (36), maybe later (40's) my taste will change.
I think you are talking about the AP RGRC, indeed it's beautiful and could be acquired for an attractive price if you want to add another watch. The 5980/R would be perfect with it. Personally I do not like the 5712 a lot, I feel the dial is too cluttered and somewhat unbalanced. I think you should be able to get at least 10% discount on the Patek from a trusted seller and around 20% off for the RG AP. Good luck with your choice. |

I would prefer the RG Schumi over any of them, and I bought the RG Schumi and Ti Schumi at the same time recently, so the 5980/1R was a consideration I chose to pass on at the time. The 5980/1R would be something I might add someday though, but not before the Schumi. I don't like the 5712 at all....

I would get the 5980-1r as its the ultimate sports luxury watch. I wouldn't settle and if it makes a statement so be it. You can always wear another watch for times when you want to be under the radar.

Well after much shopping around, a close family friend can get me 28% off the 41mm RG APs and 12% off the Patek.
I wish I could get the same 28% off the Patek, but no cigar. I have therefore shortened my list to 3 watches. In order of preference: 1) Patek 5980/1r - If I can get 28% I will go for it 2) AP 26320OR.OO.1220OR.02 - 41mm Rose Gold Royal Oak Chronograph White Dial with Bracelet 3) AP 26320OR.OO.D088CR.01 41mm Rose Gold Royal Oak Chronograph White Dial with Brown Leather Strap |

Personally much better value on the ROC rose gold IMO… And the brushed finishing is just mesmerizing and unmatched in comparison to Patek. No one does brushing like AP |

5980R strap. Like the multicolor dial and the strap. The 5980 1/R is second. I did have a touch time reading the chrono on the one I handled in Geneva.

Why not black face 5960P?? You want a sports watch, buy the AP or an RM?

I know I may go with something completely different than the OP's narrowed selection but I would personally go with a rose gold ROC (perhaps on a bracelet given my second choice) and a Patek 5712R. I quite like the 5980 (especially the rose gold one on a leather band) but if I could I'd rather get two watches in this selection. Besides, the ROC is one heck of a beautiful watch (I have to thank Neil and his pictures for making me realize this...).

5960, what a beautiful watch! I know I really fell in love with the rose gold model with the slate dial, what a fabulous timepiece it was!

I have scoured the globe to try and snipe a deal on the Patek and the best I could get is 15% off Swiss list price. I would like to really thank some of you who shared your contacts. It really is much appreciated and shows how great this forum is! I love the Patek more than the other watches, but since it is working out at £43,500 at a 15% discount vs the AP at £24,600 with a 28% discount, the AP is looking like too good of a deal for me to pass up on. Any advice? |

Spend the extra on the Patek, or wait until you can get one cheaper in the future. In this instance it isn't worth saving the extra money IMO. The Patek simply blows the ROC out of the water...

Wow... I know this is the Patek forum, but I thought more of you would find the fact that the AP is practically half the price of the Patek, hard to resist. If it is was a £10k difference, it is a no brainer, but almost double!? We are talking the price difference of a really nice second watch. With that discount rate on offer, I could get a 44mm Offshore RG and the Royal Oak 41mm Chrono for the price of the Patek.
Is the Patek really that great in your eyes? You guys have given me some very interesting perspective and I welcome more feedback please. By the way what are the servicing times like with Patek? As I don't have a large watch collection, being without it ofr large periods of time could be an issue. Thanks! |

Funny enough, my reasoning for buying the Breguet 7037 Tradition in my collection was the huge 40% off MSRP I got for it. I really wanted the RG with anthracite version but the savings on the 7037 enticed me. After the love of having saved money faded away, I was left with a watch that I only liked and didn't love. Consequently, it isn't a piece that is easy to resell, which is likely why it was so discounted. I would be wary of big discounts as they may save you money when buying but they often tell you that you will lose quite a bit when you decide to sell. If you are in love with a piece and get a great discount then that is great. All the power to you then. |
