Buy a 116520 Daytona Prior to 2014 Update?

Hi All,
Looking to potentially purchase a Daytona.
Lots of factors will ultimately go into decision.
I was just reading today that their is potential for a new ceramic bezel in 2014.
In your expert opinion, what impact will that have on a 2013 "old style" daytona?
Thanks in advance!

Eric, welcome to TRF. Where did you read about the new ceramic daytona in 2014? At this point, it is all speculation and no definite news. If you are ready to buy the Daytona now, go for it. You could always sell it in a year if the new ceramic comes out.

There will always be lots of whichever reference you want, so why wait. Buy what you like when you're ready with no regrets, as you can always flip and reload with another of your liking in the future.

It's no brainer, buy now. 116520 tends to hold value better and in my opinion is not depreciating as fast as other Rolex modern models. If the the new ceramic ever comes out and you like it, you can always trade it in for new $17k SS Daytona model :-)

If you like the current Daytona, why wait?
There's no guarantee of a ceramic Daytona in 2014.
I think it will happen, but you never know when.

You can buy a £8100 SS daytona now but on resale you'll be lucky to get £6-6500 so I would recommend not to its an inevitable update and you'll want the new one for sure but if you don't mind taking the hit then go for it it's a nice watch.

No new daytona before you see a TT version and all gold version of the ceramic.

4 years at least. Repeat thread

No one but Rolex knows about the new Daytonas, I concur to buy now...and flip later if you deem necessary. Good luck.

even if it were to be announced at Baselworld 2014 (a huge "if"), it wouldn't hit the stores until late 2014 and the wait time would be insane (i imagine a couple of years, unless you have an exceptional relationship with your AD). oh, and tack on a few grand to the price.

if you like it, buy it now. if you have a doubt about the bezel, wait.

I agree. I would see YG ceramic (RG already introduced) in 2014, 2T in 2015 and after, SS (my 2 cents...).

Current model is beautiful!

I was in exactly the same boat just a few weeks ago. Posted on here, and got the same advice to buy from everyone.

I'd say if you like it buy it, you won't regret it. IF one with a ceramic bezel does come out in the future you can always flip.

People have been talking about an inevitable upgrade for at least four years now, and it still hasn't happened. Also buying a new one now you'll get this beautiful sexy blue lume too...

I agree, if you like it now, buy it now. There's no guarantee you will even like the new version (if they make it).

Like the others have said, if they do it, it will be a few years down the road, and it'll be with a hefty price increase (look at the % increase when the Sub or GMT went ceramic).

Don't forget, whenever something new comes out, everyone will boo hoo it, saying they prefer the classic. You could just join that crowd.

Not me. I want a Daytona, but with my luck as soon as I buy one they will release the new one I am waiting. In the meantime, I will buy all the other Rolex models I want.

How long do you think the waitlist will be on a new ceramic daytona, IF one does comes out?

AD's in the UK have recently been quoting anything between 7 and 15 years on the current one.

You'll might be waiting a LONG time buddy!

I am sure the wait will be a little long. But I walk into AD's here in the US and some have usually have at least one "In the back" Daytona. I understand even current Daytona's are very hard to get in the UK.

Im With the Crowd on this one, If you like it now, buy it now! I'm sure we will see YG, and WG with ceramic bezels before we see the TT and SS models change. As most everyone on the forum agrees, you can always flip the current one later on for the ceramic if you choose to do so.

especially if you buy a PRE-loved one, the depreciation will even be less...

I agree with the rest. Buy it and enjoy it now. They will most likely put ceramic in the gold models in 2014, 2-tone 2015, and then the SS in 2016. Add about 3-5K to the price and a long waiting list could be as long as 2017 or 2018. The Daytonas hold their value well. Its not like electronic gadgets where when a new model comes out the previous one is obsolete and looses much of its value. If anything you might even want to keep the current SS as it may go way up in value a few years down the road.

A quick reminder that YM2 launched all gold in 2007. It took 6 years to get the SS version 2013.
Think 2 year all gold and 3 year TT then with annual price increase and a usual 2-3 k price jump when you get the ceramic version plus wait list. Save up 17-18k dude. I will be on social security by then. Chuckles

I'm talking about the all gold with gold bracelet and wider lugs bigger crown guards and thicker hour min hands they launched on the plat. The RG you are referring to has the current style design

The daytona is a classic - i am in the market and actively saving for one now. (18k model) if you were to buy one, you would have no problem getting 10k min for yours.

There is always much speculation as to what Rolex may bring out for the following years Baselworld.

The truth is, no one knows in advance beyond those in the upper echelons of Rolex HQ.

Think of it this way...

Rewind 12 months and put yourself in the same situation. There is eager anticipation that Rolex will release an all new Daytona at Baselworld 2013, especially in view of its 50 year milestone.

Then, at Baselworld 2013, there it is. The "new" Rolex Daytona with ice blue dial, brown bezel and a $75k price tag.

Are you glad you waited?

I personally wouldn't wait if there was a model I liked right now.

Life is short - get what you want now and enjoy it; as others have stated, you can always flip later.

I love my SS Daytona, but it's not the most legible/easy to read Rolex watch in the range. That said, the wait for a SS ceramic Daytona could be so long that, depending on how old you and your eyes are now, you may not have adequate legibility by the time you get one and will then be dissatisfied.
