I was a non-NATO kind a guy, up unti last week. Have the black and the blue i.e. conservative colours, but being able to change it up a bit is what is just so great about the NATO strap. Takes some confidence to wear the red, but if you can get away with it - why not. Have you tried a bit of leather - can work really well - mine below, going ZULU on a black and red stitched NATO:
