In honour of the Sub

Amazing how much influence the Blancpain and Sub design have had over the watch industry.
Have owned all except the two tone

Then of course the bottom photos to which we pay homage

Well, IMHO it is the classic question about the hen and the egg again!

Question is if the Rolex Sub really started this look! The Blancpain Fifty Fathoms was launched BEFORE the Rolex Sub, and some say that Rolex copied the design of the Blancpain FF:

(Pic by Padi56).

I for my part have nothing againg other makes leaning against the design of the Rolex Submariner, except maybe Invicta that looks too much like a Sub Date.

I love the Omega Seamaster, btw., and this one I do not think is copying Rolex. The dial, lugs and bracelet are very different. I am considering buying an Omega SMP just like the one shown above.

The earliest Subs did not have the "Mercedes" hands and sported parallel hands like the FF. Some Subs also had the 3, 6 and 9 on the dial.

Great thread! When it comes time for me to buy a Sub, I'm going to have a helluva time deciding between the date and no date! I know, I know, GET BOTH!

The Sub-date 16610....still the world's most recognised sports watch out there....and, IMHO, the ultimate Rolex.....the last word, in fact, as far as Rolex goes.

If anyone here would like to own just ONE Rolex, it would have to be this one!!!

I agree with JJ. The Sub has become the staple watch for Rolex. If you can only own one, you should definitely consider the Sub.

I see your point Bo about the Blancpain Fifty Fathoms, but there are lots of drivitives associated with todays designs, Rolex is no different. Would be a stretch to call it a copy IMHO, just a friendly cousin

Whether it was styled after the Blancpain Fifty Fathoms or not it most definately took on it's own characteristics and became the iconic sports watch.

I only own 1, but it's Bluesy TT! For many years, I wanted the 16610, but maturity and a SS SMP (plus unadulterated love for Bluesy) moved me to the 16613. As you may know from my other posts and have mulled over buying a used one or a 14060M to compliment my Bluesy, but I'm "cooling off" for a while and saving money for other purposes. Plus, I think I would rather have a 116710 in a couple years when the used prices are more attractive.

It's hard to go wrong with a Sub, any Sub, even a SD as an only Rolex or only watch! Just ask my brother!

I agree.... the Sub is ridiculously iconic! I love my M series Sub! Glad I got this one in the end, after a tough decision between this and the other Rollies.
