Hello all. Been doing a lot of reading and wanted some opinions on a comparison between an older Rolex GMT II and a Omega PO 8500 (42mm). Hope this wasn't discussed in previous posts. Looking for an everyday wearer. It seems both these models are of comparable prices.
Is a new model PO better choice than a used GMT?

Not looking at value retention...
and yes, I do know which forum I posted this on :)

To me, neither is an ideal daily wearer. I own the PO 2500 in a 42mm case, and it is already a substantial watch, beautiful but too hefty for me on a daily basis, in the office, etc. The PO 8500 has even more heft, is taller due to the new movement, and heavier. A great watch, dial and bracelet, and aesthetically I find my PO as appealing as any dive watch out there, but it am not a Big Watch guy, and the Planet Oceans are big.

The GMT is more appropriately sized, not nearly as hefty, could be a daily wearer, but the PCL's give it just a smidge too much glitz for me. Of the two, the GMT is better, but I recently acquired what I consider the most versatile watch in the Rolex line up.

I'd choose the GMT as the 8500 PO just seems like it would be way too thick.

Best thing to do is to try these watches on. The PO 8500 is pretty hefty in person and tall. It takes some time to get used to the weight and it could be a daily wearer but its hard to put it under a dress shirt.
The GMT is a good option

This...I would try them both on if you can. I think you may find that the Omega PO 8500 is a little on the heavy side to be a daily wearer. To me, the GMT wins out.

Practicality wise (by case dimensions), the GMT will be the lighter/smaller choice for everyday wear. Personal preference for me would be the PO 8500 (or 2500) for sure; I actually find the size of the PO 8500 as the perfect size for substance while remaining practical.

Best recommendation is to go out and try them on, feel the weight on your wrist and see what you think will work with you. Either choice will be a win win imo.

I say that as a 45mm PO 2500 owner, I find the 8500 too thick.
I have as many Omega watches as I do Rolex, so it ain't a brand thing.

To the OP - you say older GMT II versus the PO 8500 in 42mm. It really is a matter of personal preference. Either watch will be a good daily wearer imo. The "thick or heavy" comments re the PO is subjective. Not everyone has those complaints. Get the one that sings to you the most. There are most likely no GMTII you can try on at a Rolex AD but an Omega AD will have the PO you're interested in to try on.

You might consider the GMT-C as well for a daily wearer. Happy hunting!!

Thanks for the replies. I really like both. I have not gotten into flipping watches, which probably makes the final decision a bit more difficult.
