The Dumbest Rolex Question Yet.?

This was just posted (really!!) over on another well known Rolex forum:
Quote
Must be one of the dumbest question yet - Will heavy cigarette or cigar smoke harm my watch?
Quote.
I am the manager of a nightclub that appears to have won the county award for heaviest smoke level. Are there any concerns to my watch, finish, gaskets or other.

Not sure if this the best I have heard, but it must be very close to the
top of the pack.

Maybe we could sue the tobacco companies and get them to place a health warning on their packets. "Smoking can harm your Rolex"

Interesting question indeed.

I rather like the questions like can I wear my sub in the shower? Heck it is only a dive watch...right?

But for this guy, we all know his Rolex will be fine. However if there is that much secondhand smoke, I'd suggest to him that he give his watch a good scrub with soap and a toothbrush a little more frequently then normal. Maybe even daily.

If he has a jubillee bracelet, (or even an oyster) I can just see staining and tar getting into the band. That can not be good for it. I know dirt will accelerate stretch in the band and would think tar/stains from smoke would as well.

As opposed to someone who sits in a cubicle all day, he may want to wash his Rolex more often. Good thing it is waterproof!

Hey, we lawyers gotta make a living, too, ya know.

But that aside, I think the guy should worry more about his lungs and his overall health than his Rolex.

Well, I think the correct or part of the correct answer to this is as long as the stem is screwed down tight and been pressure tested it should be safe from second hand smoke as it is water proof at this point. But, hey this guy is concerned I'd send him right down to Rolex service and request the air be extracted into a sterile vac tube the type used in drawing blood and then have that air checked for polluted air. That should them if smoke was introduced to the sealed internals of his watch. but, what do I know.. I buy watches off ebay!

Well I guess that has to be twice as smart than if the question had been asked after 1.5 hours

That wasn't so dumb and may have its basis since smoke and tar do stain and as mentioned can get caught in the links. Too bad they are not greasy enough or they can act as lubricant!

For the movement inside the Rolex I think as far as your watch is waterproof (which all Rollies are) I think they should be smoke proof as well
On the outside I guess only some chemist or mineral expert can tell us if nicotine has any effect on gold/ss 904L/titanium etc.
May be it does and will take years to have any corrosion effect.
