Why do Tudor Submariners cost so much?

I have been looking at a lot of Tudor Submariners recently. My interest has been piqued due the relaunch of Tudor USA and the great looking Black Bay Heritage.

Buy my question is, why do the pre-owned Tudor Submariners cost so much? I have seen many in the 4-5K range, and still more more trading even higher. While this makes sense to me on some of the great vintage examples with a great patina the cost on average is more than i understand. It is even more confusing when i find similar Rolex branded models at prices that are not so much more.

I am sure I am missing some critical knowledge that explains these values.

I have wondered this too. A lot of the time it seems like a Rolex sub is the same price.

I think that Tudor was priced a little high and the 14060 is a 14060 - nice pieces, all 47 billion of them.

Tudors that seem to be hot these days (not including milwatches) are gilt era 7928 and Snowflakes (7922/3/4 not on the table). The Snowflakes from the 70s are a good bit cheaper than most of their Rolex counterparts - especially Red Subs.

The 80s 5513s are not big draws so that is an area where the price can close.

Earlier stuff gets into fuzzy areas but the Rolex is usually going to be higher than the Tudor.

Not apples to apples but the comparable Rolex is twice as much - and that varies greatly.

There is the demand v. Supply aspect and the watch is priced relatively to other watches on the market having regard to those competing models and prices.

Remember you get a "snowflake" and it is a Submariner, the movement is very reliable, it has an oyster case and bracelet with the Rolex coronet.

Do not underestimate the quality of this watch. Just because it says Tudor done not equate to inferior. Vintage is cool++

Glad I bought my Tudor Sub when I did! A little upset that I did not pick up some snowflakes when they were below the $2k mark.

I think you answered your own question there. Tudor is riding a high right now. Speaking of the Black Bay, they're actually making their way to $3K and just below on the 2nd hand market. BUY BUY BUY!

They are overpriced now, I await the Tudor bubble and sell off. I will buy vintage then, I just hope too many more aren't thinking the same thing. Wonderful watches but IMO the ETA has to be considered when priced against a Rolex with the crown and the movt. Either one is priced in the market way too high or the other is priced too low. I think I know which and we will see a correction at some point

I own two Tudor Subs 79090's one black dial and the other blue. IMO you dont see to
many of them in the wild like you do the Rolex Sub's. and both of mine keep almost dead on Time!!

Many decide to buy Tudor sub becos they are a cheaper substitute for Rolex sub.. But with current price, this could be wrong for now.

True but I really don't think Tudors are overpriced. If you look at the no snowflake subs the prices are now 60% or so of a comparable Rolex sub. So 40% discount for basically an easier to service movement and a different name on the dial is not that bad?

Why you ask.

For me...options. Snowflake, blue, 3 sizes (regular, mid-size, mini).

I wear a mid-size Tudor Submariner (75090) as I am a small framed man and grew tired of the heavy (to me) 40mm Rolex sports models.

Now that I have worn my Tudor and found it much more comfortable for my size, I am very pleased with it's toughness, reliability and accuracy. I would put it up against any of my 3 other Rolex sports models any day of the week and twice on Sunday.

BTW, though a small man I am an Army guy (retired) and know a thing or two about tough watches. My Tudor is tough!

Well, I personally think they look great and for collectors, I think the Tudors were an overlooked area. People started discovering that they could get another legit sub with some great dial and hand variations versus Rolex and started snapping them up once they became more informed.

I am on a lazy hunt for a blue snowflake. My frustration is that because they were a less expensive watch to begin with and perhaps less of a life goal, the number of well cared for examples of Tudor Subs versus a Rolex Sub seems to be far less. Sort of like the Porsche 944 vs 911 syndrome...lots of clapped-out 944's out there! Maybe that's another reason why good Tudor Subs are appreciating...

I got my blue Tudor sub because I work in finance and every single wall street DB wears a rolex sub, GMT or Daytona and I did not want to walk into the meeting wearing the same watch as the guy across the table from me. It was not about the money I actually own a 16610 and a LV that I keep in a safe and have no desire to wear at the moment, but I could see myself wearing the LV someday.

All of the off topic comments above aside, I am not sure what you are talking about. If you dig around you can find a nice black Tudor sub for around $2K and you will have a hard time finding a Rolex sub with date on a band for under $4K, so to me that is a significant price difference.

I got my Tudor sub in 1979 because I needed a dive watch that was reliable and I could afford. As it used the same sealing system as the Rolex sub, I knew I could trust it at depth and it never let me down. It's being overhauled as we speak, to serve as my backup to my new LV (which I can now afford, and I still actually need a reliable dive watch unlike most DBs who wear them). Speaking of which, one of the biggest mistakes you can make in life is not getting a watch or anything else because the guy across the table has one. Get what you want, wear what you want and live your life.
