needed a good dive watch. As I was an Omega guy it was hard to choose between that and Rolex (who I first heard about from the James Bond books).
I chose the Rolex and paid retail - $160.00. The bracelet was the expanding
Oyster type and fit over my wetsuit glove.
At night you could read from the bright tritium.
I became a dive instructor and was on a rescue squad.

We had many adventures together, one of which I'll share now.
We had been ice diving and when we came out of the water ice formed on my 5513.
Someone had brought containers of hot water for our cold hands. Without thinking I plunged my arms into one, forgetting about the Rolex.
Oh no! But nothing happened to it. Worked great.

Great story. No handy phones with digital cameras for quick wrist-shots in those days...

Dived in that era with a Rolex to keep me alive, in; remote, inhospitable locations, out of country, at night, running solo. Now that really made me shet and piss my pants.

Sorry guys, I can't post pics.
My daughter was born that year and she always wanted it, begged me to keep it, and I did.
Last year she asked me for it. Some may know that you can't refuse a daughter.

Some interesting specs on my 5513:
Serial # 1,42x,xxx, inside case back is stamped VI66, some paperwork had 4/67 stamped, and I bought it Nov. 1967.
I found out that the real quarter was IV and the stamp was inverted by a worker.

I'll tell some stories later.

Another little story:
I was taking a test on underwater navigation where I had to time and use a compass on a long triangular course.
Another diver was with me to make sure I didn't run into anything. So the depth gauge, compass, and watch (for timing each leg and timing bottom time) were vital.
Another case where my beloved 5513 came through.

As for pics, look at any good 5513 with meters first writing.

Was it a gilt dial or matte dial 5513? The dates are in the transitional period.

I guess gilt as the letters had a little goldish tint. I'm not sure.
