Keep the change

I collect change.
I have for years. At the end of each day I take whatever change is in my pocket and put it into an antique glass water bottle.
Well it's been 7 years since I've emptied that bottle so just for fun this afternoon I emptied it and separated it and although I have not yet rolled it here's what I have.

Pennies - 12 lb 2.8 oz
Nickels - 6 lb 9.4 oz
Dimes - 5 lb 7.2 oz
Quarters - 38 lb 7.6 oz.

I tend to prefer quarters but I will tell you that dimes are the most efficient coin to save if you consider value/volume.

I am going to use the money to help finance the building of my '46 Chevy pickup streetrod.

Anyone want to venture a guess at the final amount?

My wife gave me a nifty Christmas gift. Its a jar that has a special lid with an LCD display on the top. You pass coins through a lot in the lid and it has a sensor that feels the size of the coin pushing thru the slot and knows which coin it is. The display keeps a tally for you. So far I have about $70 since the beginning of the year.

I'll try to find a link. Something you might enjoy. The jar is about a gallon so it will take me a while to fill it.

Oh, and my guess..... How about $500?

Good luck changing that someday... banks require you to roll them and print your name and account number on EVERY roll. Those machines at the grocery store take 12% now!

For those that don't understand the "American" language, and want to guess; here's the conversions:

1 cent = 5.522kg
5 cent = 2.989kg
10 cent = 2.472kg
25 cent = 17.456kg

Based on the weight of each coin, I would guess the total is around $930.63

I've used a Coin Star and paid 8%. It would have taken me hours to roll it all up so I didnt mind. My bank offers a free service like this, hopefully yours does too.

When will we know the total?

I've taken in 5lbs of coins, and it was around $100 with mostly quarters. So I'm thinking you're in the $1500 range. Take them loose to the bank, their sorter machines are faster. Maybe put them in 5lb bags to make it easier for the Teller.

I'm with ya' Bill. We have a glass block that holds about $200.00 worth of loose change. A nice night out with the wife and a little left over.

Allan, took me a bit to click onto it but Mireyna's done the conversion for the entire weight of each group of coins.

There is over 2k in this one and it must weigh well over 100lbs so I would say you have about 1k. Man, I need to do some dusting.

Dimes = $110.00
Nickels = $14.00

Rounding only to what fits into the rolls. Everything else goes back into the bottle.

Nice! Not too shabby for chucking a few coins in a bottle over the years.
