Movement wise I prefer Lange's finishing than Patek's on those two particular models, however, the 5170g wins the match overall.
I usually don't mind subdials that aren't aligned in the middle of the dial on chronographs, Lange has been known for doing that on some of their watches and I usually find the overall look of it pretty nice when it comes with a big date window or a perpetual calendar. My main concern here is that there's nothing that would justify such a design on the 1815 chronograph, the brand name could have been smaller or placed differently to allow the two subdials to be a tad more up. As for the cases, both look nice in their own way but the lugs on the Lange make it look a tad sportier, it's fine by me but in my humble opinion those watches, despite their complications, are made to be more in the dress watch category and for that reason I think the fine lines of the 5170g look more appropriate. Regarding the hands, I love the blue hands on the 1815 and especially the fact that the chronograph second hand matches the chronograph minute hand, something that could have looked wonderful on the 5170g (instead of those regular hands). I also like the original touch of the rather long "tail" on the chrono second hand on the Lange. The only thing that bugs me a bit is that it seems like the 1815's minute hand looks very long, I prefer the smaller and nicer proportions of the Patek's hands. Finally, arabic numerals are nice but I think that with the time we spent talking about watches you've been able to know how much of a passion I have for Breguet numerals, didn't you Logan? ![]() In the end, both look pretty nice but for those reasons if I was in your shoes I'd go with the Patek. ![]()

The main issue I have with Lange is resale, 5170 is apparently also soft on resale and at MSRP on paper the 1815 looks like a better deal. For me it comes down to the case. The Lange cases are too round and tall for my taste.

Street Pricing
For similar street pricing of a 5170G or J you can get a Datograph Auf/Ab in platinum. Lange 1815 in wg is almost $30K less than the 5170.

Disregard brand name, resale value, and aesthetics, the ALS is the better technical watch. But it's never that simple is it?
Between those two I take the ALS though. |

Side by Side
Once you can get a look at all 3 side by side the decision becomes much easier.
I'm looking to add a 2nd chronograph and I can tell you unequivocally following a side by side exploration that it's going to be a Datograph to add to my 1815 Chronograph. |

The dato will win hands down in my humble humble opinion. It costs the same as the 5170 and you get 3 more things: Platinum, date and power reserve. You can't beat that.

Lange!
ALS 1815 Chrono! The blued hands and the depth of the dial made it an easy decision for me.

Personally. I would choice the 1815.
Much prefer the dial layout. But, now the datograph is a possible option. The new version would win every time. It is simply gorgeous.

I really like both, but I prefer yellow gold over white gold.
I'd go for the 5170G in this case, it's a close one though. |
