Any VW Golf TDI drivers?

Pros/Cons?

Thanks in advance.

I own a 2006 Jetta TDI and a 1997 Passat TDI - I previously owned a 2001 Jetta TDI. If you can't tell by now, I love these cars.

Excellent fuel economy and reliability. I'm currently @ 226K Miles on the 2006 and pushing 300K Miles on the Passat.

Holy crap!!! That's pretty outstanding. I was looking at a Prius pretty hard. However, I wanted something that offered (almost) comparable milage, but still felt like a car (no offense to any Prius owners on the board). Coming from a BMW, I just cant see myself making that drastic of a shift. I'm currently considering a 2010-2013 Golf TDI to take me through the next three (possibly) longer years. A two door is adequate as I am single and have no kids.

Would you recommend going through a VW dealer, and getting an extended warranty?

TIA

I purchased the 2006 Jetta from a used car dealer and the 1997 Passat from a TDI mechanic. I'm a member at the tdiclub.com and I would highly recommend joining the forums. Your best bet would be to find a local TDI "guru" mechanic to inspect the vehicle before purchasing. I have a great TDI mechanic here in California, but it looks like you're in NY. If you search or ask on the forums I'm sure that someone can recommend a trusted mechanic in your area. The members are great over there! Good luck!

I have a 2011 sportwagen (a four door golf with a bigger back end). 40k and minimal issues (a squeak and rattle basically). 40mpg without trying much in mostly highway driving.

The only issue that seems to come up is the high pressure fuel pump which can be very expensive to fix (although rare and a lot/most seem to be from people putting gas in them). A warranty for VW is only $1800 if you buy it with the car with less than one year or 10k on it which I highly suggest you buy new as the resale percentage is insanely high on them. There is a dealer VW Langehorne in PA (Chris is the guy) who sells warranties (where I bought mine) and TDIs online and he is close enough you could pick up the car from his dealership. The redesigned model is out shortly or now so I would get that or a close out on the previous gen.

The TDI club isn't exactly pro-dealership when it comes to service and maintenance.

True. I wish I could find someone around here to change my fuel filter other than the dealer.

If you can, try to make it to one of the GTG events. Changing out the fuel filter on your car is actually pretty easy... you'll just need to pick up a good set of Torx bits.

My TDI sportwagen has been great so far, but only 32k miles so far. Mileage and driveability are great.

I just turn the ignition on a few times before starting the engine to prime, but my fuel system is much different.

You may very well need VCDS to prime on a 2009 or newer. It might not be a bad idea to purchase the cable and software. I've had the software for a few years and it's been one of the best investments I've made.
