Selling Watches on CL: Always Exciting!

Just received an e-mail from someone that simply said: "Lower your price, this is your one and only warning."

Last year I had someone leave me several profanity laced messages comulating with them threatening my life after I sold a watch they agreed to purchase (they failed to show up for our ftf meeting and didn't return my numerous phone calls/emails to find out what happened so I moved on to the next buyer after 48 hours).

I also recently had someone go off on me because I sold a watch and forgot to delete the ad. This person emailed me to say they wanted to buy the watch and when I called them and explained the watch was sold and aplogized for the inconvenience, they started screaming at me.

I have friends that like to race cars, go sky diving, deep sea dive, ect...I'm always telling them that if they really want to get an adrenaline rush they need only to try to sell something on CL. I'm down to my last 2 watches from my personal collection to sell, but I may need to try the FS section on TRF where, I hope, buyers are more civilized.

People are crazy. I put my car on craigslist about a year ago, after a couple of days of getting emails from people I went to the dealer and sold it.

If you put a note for people here to be less civilized I am sure we can assist if it make you feel more at home LOL, realistically I think 99% of the people here are great and you will have a smoother sale.

You're nuts selling watches on cl. Only a matter of time before you get robbed.

Craig's List doesn't exactly have a reputation for civilized.

I don't think I'd do a face to face with anyone on Craig's list, although I have a friend who hires laborers through Craig's List. He's crazy though.

When I sell something on Craig's list, I always list it as e-mail only.
I need to exchange a few civil notes first before giving out a phone number.
So far, so good.

It can be risky doing a FTF, but I've developed a system over the years that minimizes my risk. If the buyer doesn't accept the conditions of the FTF, the sale doesn't happen.

Prior to meeting I have the person's name, email, and phone number. We typically meet in a Starbucks by my bank and I request a DL before handing over the watch for inspection. The buyer then follows me to my bank and deposits the money into my account before taking possession of the watch. Plus the watch is insured in the event there is a snatch and run.

This is what I do as well. Helps to weed out the one I wrote about earlier. I've met some pretty cool watch collectors over the years on CL, believe it or not. One buyer and I sat and talked about watches for an hour before parting ways. Another one ended up being a member on TRF.

I was looking at buying a huge lot of hotwheels on CL and have such a jaded view of CL I gave up on the idea thinking I'd get robbed. Honestly I dont know why I look at that site.

I've bought and sold things on craigslist a few times. Ive never found it to be a big deal... It's convenient if you don't feel like dealing with shipping, or sending picture after picture. Or if you want something to get sold or purchased that day. It's just like the classified ads, you guys remember... Before the Internet? It's not filled with thieves and muggers. Be smart, is all it takes

CL has gotten worse with scammers (there's no doubt); however, I have gotten some fantastic deals. It is not for everybody...

You're assuming someone won't rob you after they give you a drivers license.

Flawed logic IMO.

I'd just move on personally. You're lucky sofar, quit while ahead.

I love CL. Never sold anyting as expensive, or susceptible to scams as a rolex on there though. It is great for furniture, grills, housewares. Even better is the free section. I bought an older house and have been remodeling. I do not have access to a pickup, so when I have an old shower door, or wood panels covered in lead paint to move, I put in on the CL free section and six people will offer to pick it up within the hour! Fantastic.

I've never sold anything on CL but I've bought a few things. I picked up a grill, a snowblower and a 10ft satellite dish off there.

Ive bought a Rolex air king off Craigslist for $850, I sold it after wearing it a few months on Craigslist for $1,400. I traded some old fractional currency and a few silver coins I paid $30 for, for a tag heuer professional, sold it on craigslist for $300. Traded my 98 Cbr900rr with a freshly blown 2nd gear for my 1972 matte black/gilt lettering oyster precision. I also traded a 20 gram 14kt figaro chain, pair of Gucci dog tags, and $100 for my speedmaster auto. Roughly 600-650. And I've been happy with every watch. I bought a 60's omega seamaster with a black dial/silver lettering on eBay advertised as a good condition dial, good case and mentioned no negatives. Waited roughly a month to get a watch with a spotted dial, fairly decently damaged lug and a bent crown. Ended up taking a $50 hit on it after I threw it on Craigslist. I also bought a Tudor oyster royal off of eBay for $300 and they said it worked great and came with an extra band, I recieved no extra band and the watch wouldn't wind properly, ended up having to return it. I also got a ww1 zenith trench watch, a Rolex rebburg movt watch, and a trench watch shrapnel guard, as well as 15 leather bands for helping the lady sort through part of a watchmakers estate she bought for the day.

But I love Craigslist, I meet people in the food court of a mall, coffee shop or my home dependant of the item. I sell all kinds of stuff on there and it's great for me to be able to go out garage saleing with my girlfriend and sell half the crap I bought for well over what I paid for all of it, and I end up making money going out and having fun. the worlds not as bad as you think, not everyone's a criminal out to get you. Besides watches I've bought plenty of jewelry for melt value or less and ended up getting designer rings that i sold for 5-10x melt just because they had little stamps that people didn't care to google. Ive bough and sold Tools, toys, watches, dirtbikes, 4 wheelers, and plenty of other random household items and made much more money than my friends wasting 40 hrs a week at their conventional minimum wage job. And I had my regular job and I just used Craigslist for side cash. And if you keep an eye out you can get premium alchohol cheap, I bought 4 bottles of Dom Perignon and a bottle of gran platinum patron(all $200-$300/bottle stuff) for $250 I could write for days on how much I love Craigslist

I do think cl is great for basics, just not high value items...
Especially in Miami. People routinely get robbed of iPads
Off cl here.

I use it occasionally, and have had a good success rate.
camera & stereo equipment.

But it is plagued by the cheapest people i have ever encountered, its exhausting!

There were more than a couple of items i just happily gave away to friends rather than sell for the absurd undervalued offerings from buyers on CL.

Im selling a couple of things at the moment, hoping for the best:)

Craigslist is not too bad if you're careful. Bought a Les Paul Standard for 700.00. Traded the guitar for a datejust. Traded the datejust with an Omega ti pro + 500.00 on top. Traded the ti pro for a loose 2.30 carat SI1 diamond. Sold the diamond for 6500.00. All through Craigslist.

For stuff too large to ship or simply to clear out my garage, CL can't be beaten. I sold all of our 15 year-old kitchen cabinets for $300 which was far easier than hauling them off to the dump. Next up, an old tub.

I only use craigs list when I absolutely have to, when I was emptying my mothers house I put some things in the free section for people to take first come first serve. One person after another would make appointments, not show up or worse show up un announced. Had a few who did show up change their mind and take nothing. I even had two people start to nit-pick what it was that I had listed as if they were greasing me up to lower my price... It's free lady, take it or leave it!!!

CL seems to attract the dregs of society and they are usually missing social chromosomes!!!

I sold a junker car and piece of furniture without a problem. I would not sell a high-end item, though.

I have bought and sold many Rolex Watches on CL. I own a very busy retail store, its the perfect place for a face to face meeting. So far so good. I am not worried about meeting people. Like stated previously, I also exchange emails first to try and feel the person out before giving my store name or address for a f2f meeting.

I have actually met some great people that have turned into long term customers via my CL sale listings.
