Afraid how, that it changed the orbit and it will fall on land instead of in the ocean?

Hitting a slow moving object the size of the school bus, with a known trajectory and only in good weather? Ho hum.

We're just playing tag with the Chinese... http://www.cnn.com/2007/TECH/space/0...ile/index.html

The Chinese hit a satellite that was in orbit and on a steady predicable path. This was a satellite that was falling and had entered the atmosphere. The US of A may be broke and going down the toilet but we still are armed and dangerous. A wounded cornered animal is to be left alone.

Well to add my 2 cents

The weather was going to be a factor but it did clear for the shoot down. A "falling" satelite still has a relatively predictable trajectory...that's one of the reasons they knew what their window of opportunity was. And before the chinese shot down their weather sputnik, we did the same thing. Only it was missile fired from an F-15 going vertical at about 80,000 feet

I just don't buy the hand fed reason by the US government that it had to be shot down because of danger to the public. Looks to me it was more like target practice for a Star Wars program. Just mho.

Ummmm.....no offence but FYI.....the total combined speed was @ 22,000 miles per hour. The rockect, fired from a Naval ship, was traveling @ 8,000 mph while the sat was traveling @ 14,000 mph. Sounds pretty damn impressive to me. And was it by chance they did it over the Pacific......didn't a far eastern nation just fail, on several attempts recently, to do the same thing.....and the US Navy did it the 1st try........

damn cool event if you ask me. That bird was only a year old. It was floating down with the latest and greatest stuff on board. The chances of this going to the wrong country were just too great to risk.

Kurt,
No offence taken. The way the detailed info was provided by the government to the press, our competition with China's military space program, and the public's distrust of this administration lead me to this conclusion. If right, this wouldn't be the first time the present administration, or former administrations for that matter, have stretched the truth in a guise to presumably protect us.
Typically I don't give credence to conspiracy theories and I could be totally off base here but it just doesn't ring true to me. Again, JMHO.

No problem with that! However, when we publicly and fervently blast China for such an act, then just happen to have an opportunity to do the same test, and its wrapped up in a nice little package of how the world is being protected and saved by the US government?
Maybe we should spend less time creating more enemies.

And with that I'm going against my self imposed ban on political discussions. For that, I apologise.

No right or wrong answers here, just opinions.

No prob....but I was referring to N Korea that failed on several attempts...not the Chinese......I agree that they were trying to show off....that's why we did it in the Pacific......

Regardless of whether it was to save us from a big tank of hydrazine, or target practice or a little of both, that's mighty fancy shootin' Tex!. Wonder if they are working on something for an extinction sized asteroid

Yep. Star Wars! Ship that took out the satellite's stationed at Pearl. Local news play up the "toxic" hazard. Puleeze. This is a reaction to what the Chinese did!

I fear that a liberal administration, wanting to please our enemies, will want to talk than to show our might.

I have lived in a lot of places that hate America and want us; as free people, dead. I am not talking about the day to day people who live in those countries that hate us; who, by the way, are just trying to survive. I am talking about their leaders and followers. Why do they hate us? From my simple observation their hate is base out of fear. The fear of freedom. Spend time in any of the third world countries and you will be shocked at the lack of freedom and human rights the common person has. It is not the fault of any free nation that they are hated.

Worked for EBU news and sports and had the opportunity to work with all the major networks/broadcasters like ft2/ft3, ARD/ZDF, SRG, and so on. I was treated with much respect and made a lot of close friends who had different political positions. They did have a viewpoint of American that was somewhat negative, but again, I was treated with great respect. Even by the French. After a few beers we always found out that we were more alike than different. And yes, they did laugh any time I spoke their language because of my southern twang. I still keep in touch with many of my foreign friends.

What I always though was funny was that I was the only American to work for them, on a full time basis, and they ended up with a good old boy redneck.

Most peoples can get along if seperated from their politics. During the "Cold War", I had no problem with the Russians, it was the politics that were involved. A lot of people don't like America because of our president, but that has nothing to do with the Americans.
