This topic comes up every now and again. 25 or 30 years is what some people will say, others will say an acrylic crystal defines a vintage piece. For Rolex, some people only consider 4-digit serial numbers vintage.

So a 1950s Explorer with glossy dial will never be vintage?

Agree. My personal interpretation is a Rolex becomes vintage when no one any longer has some complaint or another about the model.
This usually takes about 40-50 years or more to happen.

For me the definition follows the decades. Three decades back it's my rule of thumb.

The first DateJust (and the second Rolex overall) to have a sapphire crystal was the 17000 Oysterquartz in 1977, wasn't it?

16013 with sapphire crystal ? On that note I do not subscribe to the belief it must have plexi. We are 43 years on from the first use of sapphire crystal by Rolex on the 5100 with beta 21 movement. It's certainly vintage as is a 1977 day date IMHO with the knowledge subs made after this in the 80's are classed vintage without question.
