Icon20 Punched Versus Handwritten?

I have a 3.3mil Red Sub, I'm the original owner-My parents bought it for my 21st Birthday at Bucherer in Lucerne back in 1974. I still have all the paperwork but my guarantee/serial # is filled out by hand and stamped with the Bucherer name and address. Why is mine handwritten while others are punched?

One of the guys will be along with a good answer for you soon, I'm positive. In the mean time, congrats on the Red Sub! Please post some pics when you can!

some collectors will only buy older models with punched papers. and it will dramatically effect the price, how ever if you have the original purchase reciept with matching hand writing most collectors consider this ok. in the case or your red subs bigger brother the double red sea dweller. one with punched papers is worth double that of one with out!

as this watch has sentimental value and i doubt you will be selling it. dont worry about the paperwork, just wear and enjoy the beauty. your parents have great taste you lucky guy.

regards sean

My other question was how and why were some punched and others written? I would have thought this would all be happening at the factory level rather than the retail one.

Maybe the original certificate was lost, and a new, handwritten one was issued by Bucherer, based on the receipt date and serial number of the watch??

So what you're saying is that every new watch of that era left the factory with a punched guarantee cert and never a handwritten one? If that's the case, doesn't say much for Bucherer's filing system to say the least!

Thanks but to be fair-RSC, Beverly Hills gave it a servicing a few weeks ago- It's first since 1978. Running a near perfect +2 per day. I've since placed the 9315/380 in safekeeping and am wearing it with a black NATO.

Hi Neil I have owned a Red Sub with hand written papers in fact they were incorrect non crono papers. I know for sure the AD supplied them with the watch when new, as I bought the watch from first owner who I have known for many years, he deals with my home insurance and is very trustworty.

I also now own a GMT from 1979 with hand written papers, but also a matching sales invoice in the same hand writing. Both the Red Sub and GMT were sold by watches of switzerland in the 70's. I am lead to believe it was quite common for this company during the 70's to make these mistakes. If they did it I am sure other AD's would have been just as careless back then. Hope this helps.

regards Sean

I do prefer the punched certificate, but an authentic certificate is an authentic certificate

It can vary from country to country and sometimes AD to AD. Rolex Geneva has confirmed some papers issued in Switzerland for a while were typed those these should be examined carefully.
Some handwritten papers were replacements from the AD.
