So, what rotation pattern do you use?

For those of you who have more than one watch, rolex or otherwise, how do you decide which one to wear?

Do you tend to go a week or a month in a row with one particular watch? Or do you alternate depending on what you're wearing?

Also, if you wear one on one day and then another on the next day, do you wind up the power reserve before putting the watch on or do you wait until the watch stops before winding?

I have two, and I've been rotating for the most part every day. But I wondered since I've read about people taking their watch out of a safe, etc.

When my GMTIIc arrives, I'll have problems for sure!

Bought my first Rolex, GMT-II a year ago, and wore it everyday and everywhere.

Bought my second, an LV, a few days ago, and plan to wear it on the weekends and the GMT Mon-Fri. Basically, GMT-II for work and Sub LV for play.

I'm also looking at a DJ for dress.

That is actually the plan until I add the DJ. Honestly, I think all Rolexes look great when you're dressed up, but I need a general rule of thumb to go by ;)

I have:
Rolex TT GMTII C,
Cartier Santos TT Automatic,
Omega SS Constelation Automatic,
Tag Heuer Carrera Chronometer Tachymeter Auto,
Movado Eliro Chrono,
Bulova Marine Star Chrono,
Swatch Corto Maltes Special Edition,
Timex watch/heart Rate monitor and I use them all at the same time

Since I bought my TT GMTIIC I have been wearing it every day, and intend to do so for a full month, just to check it's accuracy, so far it is doing great about -0.5 sec a day.
For the most part I use The Rolex/Cartier/Omega/Tag/Movado one each week Monday-Friday, and will use the Swatch/Timex/Bulova Saturday and Sunday, unless of course there is a special event that will require a nicer watch!

My rotation is typically dictated by need. If any watch will do for a given situation, then I'm in trouble.

So then I guess you find yourself having to reset the time and rewinding a lot don't you? (Unless you have a winder.)

Alternate between a DJ and a Sub every couple of weeks or so and mix it up for a day or so with one of my misc. vintage pieces. Usually whichever one strikes my fancy that morning.

True, I do not have a winder, but it gives you some quality time with your loved watches each monday morning!!!

Your know I was talking to the Watchmaker at my AD and I asked about servicing my Omega, first thing he asked was how often do you use it?, my reply was a week each month, so he said well in that case you can service it every 7 or 8 years, if you wear it every day then it should be serviced every 5years. So according to him -and he should know- it is better not to wear them daily or by the same token have them on a winder, unless of course you plan to service them every 5 years.
You know I would definetly have a winder for a watch that had an annual calendar or a perpetual calendar... but now that I think about it...what is the point of a perpetual watch if anyway you will have to service it after 5 years and it will have to be reset???? kindda defeats the purpose no?

Interesting comment by the watchmaker. He should know, but this just doesn't sound right. If we take the car comparison again, you're suppose to do an oil change based on mileage or elapsed time, so that should apply to a watch as well.

Back to the watch rotation. I almost feel a bit guilty when I don't wear the other watch. It's strange.

I just tend to go with what I fancy in the morning, only have about 10 pieces in my collection. 6 or 7 that I wear often and only 1 Rolex my SD. Needless to say at the moment the SD is getting most of the wrist time over the past couple of weeks, but I still rotate daily

I suppose, his explanation was that the cases are sealed and there is no contamination to the lubricants inside of the watch, if you do not use it as often then there is less friction and wear, oil usually breaks down because of friction and wear true for both a car and a mechanical watch I think! And the main reason you need to service the watch are the seals, as these get dry with time. Again his words, just passing along what he told me! He is a certified rolex Watch maker and he also services Omega and Tag's, they carry Jaeger LeCoultre but those are sent to Jaeger LeCoultre.

I rotate watches after no special plan. I just switch watches when I feel for a change.

That's pretty consistent with how others seem to do it. And I think, in most cases, that this would mean wearing one particular watch for more than a few days at a time. Maybe I should try that, but like I said, I then start to feel sad for the other watch.

Maybe I should wear them both at the same time like the soccer player!

Bo, what do you think about MAC4130's Omega watchmaker who said that a watch that isn't worn regularly can go longer without service?

I'm considering getting a winder. But I plan to switch up alot, so the winder would be very convenient. I think if you wear one exclusively for a few weeks, then switch to another one for a few, and so on, then a winder is pointless. But if you are switching constantly, I wouldn't want to have to wind my watch 2-3 times a week.

No system here. Mostly mood dependent with the following general guidelines.

I only wear the Lange, VC or Daytona with a suit.

Never wear the Lange with casual clothes, but wear all the others.

Travel with the GMT-IIC or the Panny for the dual time functionality. Take the Aerospace if I expect any rough handling is possible.

Like the Ball if I'm going to be operating in a dark environment (drinks and cigars outside at night or movies, etc) as the gas tubes make it a super easy to see and it looks cool.

I have 4 auto watches, but just wear the one that smiles most at me. So far it has been the SD exclusively. When I will travel out of my time zone, it may make sense to wear the GMT, and put the SD on the winder.

So the others just sit there and cry? Oh, I see you have a winder. I bet they still cry though.
