Lume Markers Defect? Need your thoughts

Hi everyone,

I've been reading some recent threads and the one which made me worried is the "Lume Dots Problem" thread. As per the PO, the superluminova has badly been applied and caused the lume markers of his GMT to look uneven.

After reading this thread, I went to check my Submariner markers and was like

Actually, the markers on my sub are not as bad as the PO of this thread but I noticed that there is a small area on the 12 hour marker which is uneven. Moreover, I noticed a small grey line on the 6 hour marker.

So here is my question.... Before I visit my AD, I would like to know if you guys think this is normal or not.

Thank you

Can you share a link to the post you're referencing?

Can you share pics of your watch?

Otherwise, I can't provide an opinion.

Yes we really need some pics before any opinions.

Here is a photo. Please look at the circled area. You will find a grey line on the marker.

Just smack the watch on a table. Then you'll be more worried about the ding in the case than that.

I think you are thinking about it too much. Macro shots are bad for people with OCD.

+1 on this. If you magnify anything enough you're going to find a problem. The question in my mind would be can you see it with the naked eye? If you can't I'd call it good.

Looks like a bubble. Can you see it without magnification?

It is a little noticeable but if it is not under warranty any more, I would just mention it at the next service interval.

hi there,

i returned the watch because it was really noticeable in some shades..

The AD did not want to exchange the watch, so I requested a refund and I bought another one elsewhere.

The new one looks good; no marks on the 6 o'clock but it seems that there is some bubbles on all the round markers especially on the 1, 20 and 25.

So what do you think guys? Can you live with it or would you send it back?

Actually, I use to notice bubbles on some displayed subs in some shops. But i do not know if its normal...

Thanks

I have decided that I am going to sell all my Rolex watches just encase after buying a lupe or other high magnification device,I might notice the tiniest bubble in a bit of lume paint. Or god forbid one of the so called alignment points might be a cats whisker out of a so called alignment. Dont think I could stand all this extra stress and worry about my Rolex watches so best sell them now before I catch this OCD and lupe madness.

Why don't you inspect them BEFORE you walk out with them?

Thats not unreasonable. I have found many on the Omega and Rolex forum that take a loupe along when picking up a watch.

FYI....A Rolex is a factory assembled watch. Keep your expectations in that spectrum of thought. They are not assembled one at a time by a master watchmaker blessed with fairy dust hands of precision.

I would live with it, but if it really disturbs you I would recommend you to return the watch and do one more round, this time with a loupe. Good luck!

Put it back on your wrist. Then place your loupe in your palm. Now throw the loupe over a cliff mate and enjoy said watch...that's my humble advice to you. Good luck.

As long as you guys believe that it is normal for new Subs to have some bubbles on the markers, I won't return it :)

Thanks for helping everyone.

Just for fun on this quiet Sunday, I put my 18 year old TT Sub under my loupe just to see.
Rikki just did a service of this last year so his eys are better than mine and he was very critical with no contaminants on the dial. I don't believe the tritium dials have the same texture on the markers and that may be what some are seeing???? My markers don't glow anymore either. .

If your are expecting everything to be perfect, sell your Rolex and pay 5-10x for and buy an Lange or Patek. Even then, there is no guarantee that something won't be defective.

No way, PPs and APs have just as many QC issues, if not more than Rolex, only at their prices it hurts a lot more.
