Omega seamaster
I was just wondering what movement does the Omega seamaster get? Does Omega make their own movement or do they use ETA movements?.... since they are both owned by the Swatch group

Omega use Eta movements that they modify.

Everybody argues for their favorite brand. Omega movements are good..
But the Sub has the Rolex 3135 movement in it. This has a complete balance bridge rather than a balance cock, which allows a larger balance wheel to be fitted. This allows for better consistency since the mass is less prone to outside influence and end shake of the balance axle is almost eliminated. Also a free sprung balance which means that movement of watch mechanics is not transferred to the balance But you pay for all this. The Omega 1120 ain't half bad either, and the Co-axial has potential too.

What Tools said.
The SMP is a better value than the Submariner, IMO, but the Rolex has the more desirable movement because of the free sprung Breguet balance and other nifty features not found in many watches in the $5K range.

There are tons of threads all over forums across the internet debating this very question. It really comes down to personal preference.
The MAIN differences are: Different movements (Most argue the Rolex is better) Different clasp designs (Omega is MUCH better then Rolex's) Price! I have both and can say that both are great watches. My Omega keeps great time, it is -1 sec per day (for the course of one year now) So I am not sure if Rolex's movement is THAT much better! (I may get flamed for that) In the end if I had to pick one to keep though, it would be the Rolex.

I always thought that there is a huge difference between Rolex and ETA based movements in everyday use.And I was wrong!
First I got ETA 2824-2,modified for Breitling SuperOcean, and later almost the same movement modified by Rolex itself(for Tudor Prince Date). Now I got Omega Speedmaster Chrono powered by ETA based Omega 3220 movement. What should be conclusion? Rolex is FAR more expensive than Omega, but Omega`s quality is in Rolex range(or maybe slightly below). Movement of my Explorer II is not much more accurate than the one from Speedmaster, but it has bigger power reserve(50h - 40h aprox.). What is better buy?SMP or Sub Date? Better value for money is SMP,without a doubt. But as a investment,Rolex is unbeatable! The value of Sub will only increase with time, while selling the SMP can be painfull(`cos you loose a lot of money on it). At the end,it`s all matter of personal taste... |

I've had both, Rolex Sub is a bit more robust, does't show the wear, SMP is a great value, I love them both

I have the SMP and Sea-Dweller. Both are great watches, and the Omega offers outstanding value (30-35% off) when purchased through an AD. It really boils down to budget. If you can afford the Sub/Sea-Dweller you owe it to yourself to pick one up. If you can't swing the Rolex, you will be pleased with the Omega.

In Denmark, I cannot get more than 15 % on the SMP.
I have considered ordering one from abroad, but when the watch hits Denmark, custom's charges (37 %) will ruin the deal.

Going by sheer looks alone, I think I would like the SMP 2254.50 a bit better than the Sub. There's something about those sword hands. If I ever "fell out" with Rolex, I would have the black SMP on my wrist within a day.
The thing I dislike about Omega is that some of their designs can look dated after a few years. |

But I DO agree with you that the swords hands are great. Another thing I like better about the Omega SMP than the Sub is the CURVED crystal that makes for a nice old-fashioned optic when the dial is seen from an angle. Another advantage of the SMP as compared to Rolex are the matte case sides. Polished case sides look good, as well, but just aren't very practical for everyday use since they are scratch and grime magnets.

I believe most SmP's get the Omega 1120 movement - a modified ETA. It's very reliable and robust.
