Are you a WIS if you wear a dssd?

Just a curious thought. Met a prospective client today who was rocking a dssd in short sleeves. I wanted to compliment him on his watch but bit my tongue because I was afraid that he might be offended that I could ID his watch across a conference table. If it was an AP or patek, I would have said that I was a watch affecionado but being a rolex I was unsure. If it was a standard sub or datejust I would mark it as a luxury buy. But a dssd is a serious watch. Can't imagine anyone buying it who is not a wis. What are your thoughts?

I wear a Datejust and GMT. On the rare occasion I get complimented on my timepiece I really appreciate it and see it as an opportunity to talk watches. Someone who invests DSSD money into their wrist should take a compliment well unless he is a complete ass or super insecure (in which case he shouldn't rock a 44mm ultra dive watch from Rolex).

I can see someone wanting a Rolex and trying to make it a "fashion" watch and getting the biggest one they could find.

Happened to me couple of times with other Rolex watches. I would be very hesitant to make a comment in public. It would need to be just the two of us that can hear the conversation. That goes with any luxury item compliment for me.

I was that person once. Didn't like small watches and Rolex didn't appeal to me. Tried the DSSD and was too "thick".
Waited 6 years to "mature" and flip my Breitling SA.

When you hear "that big-faced Rollie" in rap songs, there's only been one watch they could have been talking about. Now it's between the DSSD and the YMII. They're not automatically WIS watches, like a BLNR or or Hulk might be.

With Rolex, it's really a hit or miss. Same goes for AP. It's best to not say anything.

I usually don't comment on someone's watch if I just pass them on the street, but I see nothing wrong with saying something when it's a more personal or business setting.

You just might get a good story out of it even if they aren't a WIS. I once made a comment to a supervisor from another work center about this sub. He said it was his wedding ring; meaning that after a divorce, he sold the ring for the watch.

I don't get why people are so afraid to "say something"? What's the worst that could happen? Someone truly bought it for the "fashion" (which, I might add, is not a crime-there is no "right" reason for buying a Rolex). If so, and the person doesn't respond or says "thanks", so what? I can't recall a time I was ever offended by someone offering me a compliment. If the concern was "ID'ing" the watch (again, not sure why that's a concern) couldn't someone just say "I like your watch" and see where it goes?

I always comment on them. I've had people look at me dumbly, in which case they usually go "uh, thanks" and move on. I don't feel worse for it, and I highly doubt I ruined their day by the passing compliment. If I did, them I feel truly sorry for them.

You absolutely did the the right thing.

Never comment on the watch of anyone you don't know.

Ever.

99% of the time the conversation does not go in the direction you expect it to. Odds are he doesn't know a Deepsea from a Datejust, so you hoping that he is a 1% WIS looking to engage in watch geek discussion would more than likely plop...

Maybe if you work closer with him in the future you can carefully bring it up, but only then.

I never comment on a persons watch. Never. I've had some awkward moments going both ways.

I saw this young guy, maybe 22, one of those urban hipsters wearing something like a rose gold day/date on his completely tattoo'd arms. I was like yo nice watch, he was like yeah yeah...thanks
then another guy in the elevator was also wearing a rose gold something, I asked hey is that the skydweller, he showed it to me and said, nah just the day/date...I was thinking about getting the skydweller but liked this better.

um, if someone is thinking about the skydweller you BUY the skydweller.

I love complementing people with crap watches..."wow sir is that the casio databank with calculator incrediable timepeice. "

Ran into two pro basketball players over the last couple years in my line of work and they had no clue what it was other than a big Rolex that didn't look silly on them. So to answer your question No.

I guess I don't see how that would be awkward, but fair enough.

I thinknit would be okay If you nonchalantly mention it in a conversation. It would be easy to test the waters. Depending on his answer you could change the subject. If the person does turn out to be a wis you've got yourself a repeat customer.

I think one song goes "the blue-faced rolex? I bought that b$&@h". Don't ask why I know such things.

I don't remember the exact quote, but somebody said something pretty funny the other day. A lot of people wear a watch strictly as a fashion piece. Complementing their watch is like complementing their jeans. Would you walk up to another guy and say "Hey man, you look great in those jeans!" ?

How are they supposed to react to that? At best, you'll get an awkward thank you and you will feel pretty silly. When we see others with nice watches, we want to believe that they have a passion for watches, but that's not the case. If anything, we're in the minority. That's why I don't say anything.

Kind of like the "Rolex and your attire" thread. Those are some handsome shoes and match wonderfully with that strap.

IMHO, anyone that spends more than $5000 on a watch, won't mind being complimented on it.

Unless it's "just Grandpa's hand-me-down, I don't' know much about it", then YES, they are a WIS.

The best thing to do is tap your water glass with a piece of silverware to get everyone's attention within 300 yards, and then scream across the room as loud as you can, "HEY, YOU THERE!!! I LOVE YOUR ROLEX!!! R-O-L-E-X. YEAH, YOU! I LOVE YOUR ROLEX!!!!"
