Do you ever tell people your Rolex is a fake?
I had to do this once because an uncle in law turned out to be quite an obnoxious WIS. My 16610 got nary a second glance at most family outtings, but once he saw it he wouldn't stop saying "ooo, Rolex, you must be making the money now huh?" So then of course all the other relatives ask to see my watch and are like "what? that's a Rolex? no gold?" and other dumb comments.
So I quickly told them "It's a fake, picked it up for 50 dollars in New York.". And that kind of quieted everyone down. Of course then my obnoxious uncle says, "let me show you what a real Rolex looks like" and comes back from his closet holding his own 16610, a no-date Sub, and a Seadweller. |

I am sorry you have to be surrounded by such family!
Unfortunately these kind of things happen and I think you handled it well. In these situations I would compliment the uncle for his watches and move on. |

The funny thing is later he started comparing his 16610 with mine and pointing out "differences" and saying that's why mine is fake. And then he offered to sell me any of his watches for a "family discount". Now that offer I should have taken, I do have a fondness for the no-date Sub. |

Oof. I have a Brother-in-law who seems to be in your Uncle's league in terms of being a know-it-all, but he is far too cheap to buy a nice watch.

Are Rolex watches cheaper in HK? I thought the HK currency is pegged to USD so wouldn't it be basically equivalent? |

I have only because there are a couple of family members who always ask for money. When these particular two say things like I live so well, I must have money to spare, I simply tell them my home mortgage is up-side-down, I lease the cars and my Rolex is a Faux-lex.
At least it shuts them up. |

No, I've never gone down that path of saying my watch is a fake.
I empathise with the situation you were in, though my approach would be to make light of their comments. |

Nope, but when asked about the value of certain watches from people who have noticed them it has happened that I've cut 3/4 of the real value off.

I would if I felt it made me look like a big shot, I've got a big mouth so I don't need to let my wrists also do the talking that would just be a massacre.

Yeah, I was at one of the riverboat casino's in St Louis throwing dice and two guys made a comment about the GMT Master II on my wrist... I said it was my faulex, they laughed...

Rolex was cheaper everywhere ten years ago. Also, I would have just told him to shut up rather than lie about anything.

I've thought of it if it were in a potentially embarrassing environment. Most people know Rolex but don't know how much they really cost; it doesn't really matter if they ID the watches.

No, I understand why you would say that to your uncle. But I feel that wearing a fake watch or having others think I'm wearing a fake watch would make me look like a fake person, if that makes sense

Nope. Never will. I also don't discuss value. But, my watch doesn't define me either. i wear it to tell time. It was a gift.

I was thinking the samething, I would rather be percieved as anything other than a fraud. If you will wear a fake watch, what else will you lie about?

this is pretty funny because my wife's uncle, his name is Dale, ALWAYS makes comments about my Sub...he'll say something to the effect of "you still wearing that fake Rolex?" when he knows its real...I usually just laugh and shrug it off...the man is worth millions and he wears a rose gold Gruen I believe from the 50s or an old Seiko he got overseas when he was in Vietnam..i'll say to him why don't you go buy one? He'll usually say yea right what did you pay for that thing? I'll give him a ballpark figure and he acts like 4k is an outrageous amount of money...gets annoying...but funny how similar the two situations are...

No, I've never done that.
I did have one rude individual at one time tell me his cheap twenty dollar Timex kept as good time as my Rolex. I told yes,.. a watch does reflect one's personality. |

I have not, nor have I been in the uncomfortable position the OP describes.

Just once. He is my friend who has an Omega. He probably could not take it that I have nicer and more expensive watch than him.
