MSN Video: Does Anyone Wear a Watch Anymore?
MSN video talking about the decline in watch sales in 18-30 yr olds. However, there is still a high demand for luxury timepieces. They pull out what looks like on older DateJust?

I could see that. The folks who would normally buy a $20 Timex have no need for it. That was me for 6 years. I took off my Seiko on a golf vacation in 2001 and didn't put it back on until last year.

I'm in that age group and while I have a cell phone, I usually never use it to tell time. I find it far more convenient to just look at my wrist. Plus I like looking at my Rolex as well

Hmmm, in that respect, the use of your cell phone to tell time is like a return to pocket watches!

Even when i was in college, i always preferred wearing a watch. However, i do notice lots of people use their cell phone to check the time instead of wearing one.

I am 26 and I have wore a watch nearly everyday since I was little. I have also carried a cell phone for the last 10 years. I feel "naked" without a watch on.

I wonder if in the future only the old fogies will be wearing a watch. Or maybe they will go the way of the pocket watch. I can't see it though.

I've always worn a watch, and couldn't imagine not. Maybe it has something to do with being in the military (or military academy) since I was 18--I have an unnaturally OCD compulsion with time in general, and being on time in particular. I'd be more likely to leave the house without a wallet than without a watch.

I don't see many younger people with watches, but I never see one without a cell phone. I never leave home without wearing a watch.

History has a funny way of repeating itself. The cell phone is just a modern interpretation of the pocket watch.
In a few years, it will be fashionable to have a wristwatch again. That's just the way history works sometimes. SNB |

Wearing our watches is so much more than knowing the time. For me at least it's about a symbiotic relationship; wearing, on my wrist, a remarkably precise, absurdly miniaturized, work of art, that lives a mechanically perfect life that I somehow find soothing and reassuring in a world that is anything but. In return we care for, adorn, and cherish them in such a way that we hope our spirit will in some way survive in them when we are gone, living on the wrists of our progeny.
Well, actually I just really really like them but that stuff sounds pretty cool doesn't it? |

I think the pocket watch went out of favor because of the increased popularity of casual clothes - at one time, almost every man wore a suit with a vest, even to the movies or to Sunday service. So there was a place for a pocket watch. As less people wore suits, there were less places to easily put a pocket watch, and with the advent and invention of wrist watches, the wrist watch became more popular. I don't see a lot of "Timex" type watches on young people - but I do see Panerai, Breitling, AP even on young wrists along with blingy fashion watches. Because they are jewelry, I don't know if they'll ever go out of style. But I guess everything does.

My cellphone is very very basic. I use it to make telephone calls and send TXT, if there's no alternative. It's a prepaid model Nokia. I can honestly say I've never used it to check the time.

Interesting. My son [24] was recently at my house for dinner and kept looking at his cell phone for the time even though he was wearing a Marathon SAR. He claimed it was still a habit.

I got this "watch looking mania"(but not because I`m control freak, actually I`m a watch freak),so I never use cell phone to tell the time.
