Fine detail camera

To capture Rolex in all its glory, anyone have any suggestions. Would like under $400.

Sent from an iPhone on a secluded island

iPhone isn't cutting it.

Is that from a 4 or a 5? I looks like a focus or motion issue.

Which iPhone do you have? The new 5s is more than capable of taking stellar pictures.

If you don't want to get into DSLR territory, I would recommend the Canon G16. It's around $450. A bit higher than your budget, but it is great for macro photography when an SLR and a macro lens isn't an option.

A bit of advice. Lighting is the key. Ideally you don't want to be using the iphone camera flash. Good lighting can make the difference between a mediocre and incredible image. Using a flash directly at an object in the dark will rarely produce a nice image. Especially when it's bouncing right back at you.

Even with your iphone camera, you will get a much nicer image if you take pictures outdoors where light isn't an issue.

For 400-500 you are better served getting the latest phone...you would be hard pressed to get better pics at that price.

Yeah the 5s are very good with close up watch pics, maybe work with your camera on your phone or upgrade to a 5 if you don't have one already!

Use natural light and ditch the flash. That will improve your results dramatically. Get Photoshop Elements, so that you can tweak the results. It's a very useful program and even if you only learn to use 10% of its functions, it'll still be a bargain.

A little practice and you'll be amazed at your results. These are some very general suggestions and I don't submit my own work as an example of how to do it.

Experiment.

Lighting is key. If possible, avoid the flash at all costs. Take some pics during the day with a lot of natural light (outside if possible) and you'll notice that your pictures will be better.

Holy sh*t, Tom... I think a lone tear just ran down my cheek.

To the OP - yes, listen to everyone else. Lighting, no flash, etc. And don't try to get too close to the watch or the phone/camera won't be able to focus on it. Just keep about six inches away and crop in later to get a closer look.

Great 1680!

These are iphone 5 pics - it does the job but doesn't capture true image quality and colours but not bad

These are Olympus OMD pics with prime lense - it will capture tones and colours with precision and make much better photos - iphone and proper camera images are quite different visually. No artificial lighting or touching up used

I use a Ricoh CX4... it's not the latest model but excellent for macro pics (especially in "Scene" mode combined with macro).

get a second hand Canon 650D... was the current model one year ago. You can probably pick one up for $400- it is a good entry level DSLR

Phone cameras are very capable these days, as others have said
ditch the flash, use natural light & I'm sure you'll be pleased with the results

Understanding the basics of photographs will get you further with equipments you have available. In that range, someone said iPhone5 takes good pictures and I agree. Also, you may look at point and shoot with good macro capability, such as Sony S110 or RX100 II. Both are inexpensive and offers a little more flexibilities.
You can increase your understanding by watching videos such adorama's on you tube.

In same event, you may find you like to take photos. I think Hawaii would be ideal place. You may want to expand your budget eventually to do other things. So at this point, I will offer for you to take a look at Nikon D800 with one of the Nikkor macro lens.

I got a Nikon CoolPix P330 that is a awesome little camera.

Here is a quick and dirty movement shot.

All those pics are from the same camera.

Some pics from the P330

I guess it's a great camera you will find around $250
