I would change my insert Datejust 1601 with that of a smoth steel bezel.
It's easy to do, it takes a special tool?
The glass does not come out when you removed the insert?
What is the reference steel insert?

I take bit you mean the bezel, yes there is a tool, to take it off and press it on and the glass comes off
