Icon12 Confession

I bought my one and only Rolex in 2007 and I wear it almost every day.
I have the knowledge, tools and expertise, yet I have never polished it once! Not even a touch-up...
I'm not trying to preserve it for "vintage quality purposes" either... I just don't like the look of first scratches on a just polished watch!

I have to agree with you Vanessa..

Obsessing about scratches and polishing them out all the time is a slippery slope. After that polish and looking at a pristine watch again, the next scratch can send you up the wall.

I'm not too worried about polishing up an SS Rolex, a gold one or gold AP or PP is different however.

Vanessa, you've heard the story about the shoemaker's kids going barefoot? But I agree with the sentiment, nothing like a favored possession well worn and showing its patina.

Domed bezel with an Oyster bracelet; I knew I liked you!

As an admitted scratchaphobe I never viewed this from the "next first scratch" point of view; as Spock would say, "Interesting..."

I'm fine with a light polishing during every service. I figure, if I service my watch every 7-8 years, in 28-32 years, my watch will have only been lightly polished 4 times. That's not too bad. Certainly, if done correctly, it will not alter the shape of the case or bracelet.

Your watch looks great. Those pesky PCLs attract scratches like no other, I'm sure. There is no way to avoid it.

Please don't start with a Rolex movement! Buy a cheap Invicta or something with an automatic movement and practice on that first before you move on the Rolex. Watchmaking isn't just about knowing how to put the watch back together!

Thanks for your input vanessa! Are there any other considerations I should take? I was considering watch making school the other day but its such a specialised profession I thought maybe I could teach myself some basics. How many tools would I need to start with the invicta ?

If you are considering watchmaking school, then please don't try to teach yourself, because it's harder to break old (bad) habits than learning the right way from the start.

If all you want to do is tinker around a bit, you can do some research on the forum here, because there has been numerous threads about what kind of tools you should get to start of. I'm sure the information you'll find here is much more valuable than any suggestions I would give you, since I'm not familiar with hobbyist-type of workshops.
