Why is the 11610 more expensive than the 116710?

You would think the 116710 would be more expensive being that it has has the GMT hand.

The Sub is more popular, so Rolex can charge more. In addition, the Sub has a higher water resistance, so perhaps they are justifying it that way. It has always been that way as long as I can remember.

You have to take into account the 11610 is discontinued and some people prefer the older case and bezel.

I believe he is comparing SubC with GMT2C so he meant 116610, not 11610.

To the OP: The Sub is iconic. The GMT is just fabulous.

The 16610 was priced at $6,000 when it was discontinued, so I'm assuming you are really comparing the SubC (116610) to the GMT2C.

The price difference is $100, with the Sub being higher, Given the marginal difference, I chalk it up to where Rolex wants to position the 2 watches. Basically the trade off seems to be the increased complication of the GMT movement versus the increased WR of the Sub. Assuming these differences offset each other cost-wise I figure the Sub is priced slightly higher because Rolex sells more of them and wants it priced that way. Personally I'd think the GMT movement cost difference is more than the beefed up Sub case is, but I'm not sure about that. But I figure Rolex's margin on the Sub is probably a little better.

... And oodles more platinum inlay in the GMT bezel + the extra white gold to make the GMT hand. What a steal!

But isn't the Sub clasp different as well?

Only on Sub-C and SD-C. The DSSD has a different one.

The Sub Date has always been priced above the GMT, just like the GMT has been priced above the Explorer II. (there are exceptions like when the ceramic GMT first came out and the Sub was not yet ceramic)

You don't get charged for an extra hand, you get charged based on market share - the Sub Date is more popular, it gets a higher price - Economics 101.

I completely spaced on the clasp. Thanks for pointing that out.

One of the explanations I've heard is the clasp. Truthfully, I think Rolex just knows the Sub is more popular and it’s what the market will bear. I think Rolex may be the only manufacturer with a GMT complication cheaper than a standard diver.
