Buy from AD or TRF?

Hello, looking for some opinions, going to get my first Rolex, a SubC, and wondering what people's thoughts are on buying from here vs AD. An AD told me he would take care of the sales tax and would warranty it for 4 years. Is the extra warranty worth the extra $1k?

I would personally still go with TRF. You already mentioned sales tax, but you should be able to get below MSRP on a BNIB on TRF, not sure where you're located or if your AD is giving you a discount on top taking care of the sales tax? I'd assume no since you mentioned $1k more. Ultimately up to you if you're comfortable buying on TRF. I'd be comfortable buying from DavidSW and saving $1k.

That's your decision. I'm willing to pay $500 more for the AD experience, the instant gratification and the goodwill it creates to get subsequent discounts or access to harder-to-find pieces. $1000 is a lot though. Up to you.

It depends on what you want and if saving money is worth the wait. For me, when I want something I want it now. I would rather buy from an AD and have it today over saving some money to have it in a day or two.

For me the money saved is not worth it unless it is a substantial savings. If buying a brand new watch I'll go to the AD, if buying an older used watch TRF has the best deals by far.

Bought several from both. I have no regrets either way. My motivation for buying from each was different and specific. ADs don't sell vintage, which comprises a lot of my collection. And when there are hot releases, such as the GMT IIC and Milgauss GV ( now the SD 4000 C) that take a while to filter down to ADs, you might as well get on the AD's "list" because the prices on here are equal to or higher than list initially. Good luck !

TRF trusted seller jizeal gets my vote. He gave me a great deal on a BNIB Hulk.

Thanks for the comments. No additional discount besides the sales tax, so it would be $8550. From my research BNIB 116610LN's are going for $7500-7600 on here. I don't really have a problem waiting, it's the extra warranty that's got my wheels spinning.

I doubt I will be trying to get any hard to get models in the future.

I doubt you will need the extra warranty. It is possible, but you are buying a rolex. TRF!

I agree with this especially if it's going to be your only Rolex.

If money is more of a concern, the watches from gray market dealers are certainly cheaper.

Good luck

I thought TRF was an AD and davidSW was its top sales associate.

So the deal is $1k now to extend the warranty by 2yrs?
Well let me ask you this- do you get the extended warranty on cars and are happy with it? If so, maybe this is worth it for you.

I've been very happy buying from an AD first and then buying here. But then again, my first Rolex the price difference was a few hundred, so I went with AD. The second time around, the price difference was $2000. So at that point I bought it off a trusted seller.

I get good prices from my AD. The problem is sales tax. If you buy from a trusted seller on TRF that is out of state you will save that money. I buy from both so that if I want something a little harder to get I have a relationship with the seller.

If we knew that we would all be selling on TRF!

There are theories but trusted sellers aren't talking.

It all depends on your financial situation. If the difference in price for you is like the difference between getting a bottle of average or premium whisky for most people, then go AD. If it's a major financial outlay, go Trusted Seller.

The warranty on a Rolex is unlikely to be used in two years or four years.

I'd recommend a trusted seller here on TRF. Do YOUR RESEARCH FIRST.

Personal preference

Not a wrong decision either way. Plenty of pros/cons on both sides.

Two year warranty when purchased with discretion here is plenty of time for early life failures to occur. The extra two years won't be necessary nor will it cover a needed service at the five to seven year mark. I'd say buy through TRF with care.

Regardless of brand, and the price difference, I always buy from an AD...Unless i am buying a discontinued or vintage watch... I just try to bargain to get the best price. I feel more confident that i am really getting a "brand new" watch, with no possiblity that it has been worn "in transit to avoid customs", "worn for a week with a different strap", etc..Warranty card starts when you buy it..but thats just me...but i dont buy at boutiques because they dont give any discounts..

TRF.

Although without ADs TRF sellers wouldn't exist... No matter, here's plenty of non enthusiasts willing to keep them alive.

If you want to pay sales tax and 10-15% more on top of tax that's on you... If you aren't near your bank to wire money for a watch you'll likely get in 24hrs anyway, then you either have too much money to care, or have serious patience and laziness issues.

I can understand a couple hundred for the AD experience, or even sitting down with yor SO to commemerate an anniversary or engagement with a pair, but we're likely talking a thousand or much, much more. There's nothing an AD can do that a TRF seller cannot. In fact, my three local ADs have never heard of the new Sea Dweller or Milgauss.
