Question about lug holes...

A lot of people seem to love the ole lug holes on the older models. Is this because they like the the look? or because it makes it easier to change bracelets? Or is it another reason?

The two reasons you have listed and the fact that there is a marginal strength and safety factor with the shoulderless spring bars that extend nearly through and through the drilled lug.

Definitely more tool

Both...They hark back to a time when a Rolex was a tool watch and not jewelry.

By the way, I hadn't thought of Mack Bolan in years! Loved those books when I was a kid..

plus you can always weld in a piece of stainless stock to make fixed bars for that rugged mil-spec look

Because they speak of a time gone by…

A time that we will never see again…

A time when things were made to last…

A time when people took pride in what they did and quality was the watch word…(No pun intended)

The days were warmer then and we had our whole lives ahead of us...

Older Rolex ain't more of a "tool watch" just because it's got lug holes or it's less shiny than current Rolex. Stop it with this 'tool watch' thing. Wearing a Sub while cutting grass, riding a bike, fixing a car, don't make it a tool watch.

Rolex stopped becoming just "tool" watches long before lug holes disappeared.

When was Rolex truly just a "tool"? Maybe the early 70s? Even back then, a Rolex cost far more than just a basic timekeeping tool from Timex did.

I can't agree more. Who spends thousands of dollars on something that is just a "tool" but performs actually worse than a real tool (basic quartz watch) that costs 1/50th of its price and has truly useful features like heart rate monitoring, light up display, compass, timers, alarms, etc?

Ever since the quartz revolution, most mechanical watches over a few hundred bucks stopped becoming true "tool" watches.

Sort of analogously, one can by Craftsman or Snap-on. Both tools but different in quality and price. The more expensive a tool is doesn't make it less a tool just less likely to be used as one carelessly. Timex works as a watch but sends a certain message. Rolex works as a watch and sends a different message. Choose the tool that meets your needs. Enough of this tooling around.

This is what took me so long to get a 16520 even though it's from circa 1990, but I eventually broke down.

But most of mine have em

Yes, but the flow of water through them helps cool the lugs for better performance, as does air flow to a lesser extent if you wear your Rolex on dry land...

I have a sub with them and one sub without them doesn't really matter that much. They both look good on their respective designs.
