Which? Sub 16610, Exp 2 16750, Exp 1 39mm
Hi guys,
I have the opportunity to buy one of these watches: sub date 16610, exp 2 black, exp 1 39mm. All 2nd hand, with papers except the sub which is watch only but in good condition. I have a Yachtmaster and a TT DJ so I figured a more casual sports model would work. Most I've asked have suggested that I just get the sub and get it over with. But feel it's a bit too similar to my YM - like a darker, more rugged sibling. Haha! So I wanted to know if there were arguments pointing towards the other 2. What do you guys think? Thanks and regards, lorsban

Do you "need" a date on your watch? If so that kills off the 39mm explorer right away and leaves you between the other 2. I have owned both the sub and the exp II of those the 16570 was my preference as I dont dive and it gives you the second time zone and is a little bit more unusual in the wild.

For me the sub is a no brainer. I've had my sub for over three years now and it's been perfect for everything from drinking on the beach to black tie events.

As noted, really depends whether or not you need the date. If so, the Submariner. If not, obviously the 39mm Explorer.
FWIW, only my GMT has the date feature, and while I like the clean lines of a watch without a date, miss the feature when I need to quickly recall what the date is - and it happens more often than I expected! |

It is between the Sub and the Explorer, and I lean toward to the Explorer I, definitely. Clean, clear dial, updated bracelet and clasp, under the radar, durable and versatile. Why even ask?

I purchased an Exp II black dial and would do so again in a heartbeat.
For me although the Sub is awesome I wanted something you don't see on the wrist of every other Rolex owner. I like the date feature, GMT hand and the fixed bezel of the Explorer II the style of that watch goes in either a casual or a dressed up situation. At the end if the day go with the watch that speaks to you most.

Sub. An EXII is a second, third fourth watch imo.
I don't get the logic of buying a watch because it's not so common in the wild. That's like saying, you won't buy an S-class because you see too many of them on the road. They sell a lot of them (subs, in this case) for a reason. |

he has a YM already and as OP said he feels the sub is just it's more rugged sibling, I agree 100% with that. The exp or exp 2 would be great. since he has a DJ already I'd say exp 2 is the choice, if no DJ than exp 39mm by far.

Excellent! All varied respones! I was half expecting a lopsided thread favoring the sub. Haha
Generally I want a date but then again, the explorer is just so nice and clean looking and my phone keeps me updated on everything else anyway. That's why it's among my options. I will say tho that the sub has been a grail of mine until I sort of outgrew it and I went with the YM. I DID have a blue 16613 tho but I sold it cause I felt it was too flashy. This is the priciest tho. With regards to the exp 2, I just think it's very cool, suave looking and doesn't scream Rolex. Plus it has a 2nd timezone. Helpful cause I have family abroad. Among the three it's also the cheapest. All 3 watches are fairly equal to me in the sense that they'll all serve the same niche in my collection. They just have a different way of serving the need. Hence the conundrum.

The 16750 is a great watch and the GMT function is extremely useful.
I am wearing mine today.

Go with the 16570. Like you said, your Yachtmaster fills the Sub-style category. The ExpII will give you the second time zone, too, which is both cool and useful.

I should've put a poll in there. Results would be interesting.
With regards to the Sub, one thing holding me back is that the model I'm looking at seems kind of average or even dated in the Submariner echelon, which has the SubC, early edition subs. Of course that's just my feeling. The Exp 2 also has an early model and a new 42mm version but I like the aesthetics of the 40mm. True there are versions of the 40mm one as well but the older version doesn't exactly look too old next to it.

Yeah but for the sub tho I'm thinking either a birth year one or the SubC would be better? More out of the ordinary.

As expected...sub crowd comes roaring back.
Well, tough to argue against a British secret agent. It even made me want to pick up a Walther PPK once. Lol

Well the explorers have been sold and I just saw the sub. Definitely something going on there. I can see what the fuss is about. Haha
Hopefully we can make a deal.

Alas, I backed out. Guy was asking for too much for the sub, watch only. No papers, or box.
I'm not exactly in a market swimming with Rollies. So, the hunt goes on...

Available at a great price I couldn't say no to. T series, comes with RSC Japan service papers for 2007. Tritium is near depeleted. Should age well soon. Definitely happy about this one.

Fine choice, you will not regret it. I prefer the understated Explorer II over the ubiquitous Submariner (although my heart swells for the dateless 14060).
