Rollies and Safes?
As many of you know, I recently boosted my collection. I decided to buy a safe to keep my unused ones in. I'm mostly wondering if there is anything I should be concerned about. I read something about moisture, and my safe cam with a silica packet or something that I'm supposed to keep in there, and I do. Also, I have been and plan to continue opening it at least 1-2 times a week to let the air circulate.
Thoughts and tips? |

A safe should be safe (pun intended). I have a small safe, bolted to the floor, and it does not seem to be moist in there. At any standards, humidity should not have any effect on your Rolex watches, but if it is VERY moist inside the safe (which I doubt), paperwork might get damaged.

My suggestion is to buy a gun safe. But what ever type you do wind up buying BOLT IT TO THE FLOOR. This is highly recommended, and I think that it will keep you valuables more safe and decrease the risk of theft.
Also, although it may be a bit expensive, I would also recommend buying a home security system. You can save quite a bit on your home owner's insurance. Hope this helps... |

Brandon, you live in Fl. I live in Ms. The moisture IS an issue. When I first bought a safe, I had 3 Rolexes, one was my Rootbeer GMT, which I only wore when "dressing up." After about a month in the safe, I took it out and noticed condesation inside the crystal. Obviously it needed a new gasket, cleaning, etc., but the humidity in the safe was part of the problem. If you go the desicant route, change it frequently. I changed mine monthly. I now keep my collection in a safe deposit box at a branch bank 2 blocks from home. Total climate control and totally safe.I change out watches weekly, getting 2-3 at a time. The bank people are fine and we've become close friends. Semper Fi, Rick

You can get a de-humidifying rod for your safe, all you have to do is plug it in.

Agree.. Many safes come with knockouts in the bottom to be able to run either a light or a de-humidifier.. If yours doesn't, it may be possible that there is a soft spot in the bottom that could be drilled..

Browning (gun maker) has a product called "Dry Zone" which I use.
You place the box in your safe and over a period of time the dots on the box turn a pink color. When this happens, you remove the cloth bag from the box and place in an oven at 240 degrees for 3 hours. This reactivates the bag which you again place in the safe. It works great and the box lasts for years.

I use Goldenrod dehumidifiers. They work great. If you choose to use the desicant method, make sure you use enough for the size of the safe. I have found that they tend to over-estimate the amount of space they cover. So be aware of that. You can Google Goldenrod dehumidifiers to find out more.
