UPDATED: ... My new and improved 5512...

So for those of you who remember, I recently posted a picture of an authentic 5512 that I had purchased with an absolute horribly refinished dial, enough so that it ruined the look of the watch.

Well big BIG thank you to John (Springer) on this forum and every one else that pointed me in the right direction, I was able to obtain an era correct, unserviced all original dial for my sub with respect to its serial number.

Here are the before and after pics, I couldn't be happier with the results....

***BEFORE***

+

***NEW DIAL***

=

***AFTER***

Just the right amount of patina, very subtle yet noticeable. The watch is now perfect, minus the still kind of glossy bezel insert. But can't complain :)

Before anyone says anything, I know this kills the value of my watch to have replaced the dial lol frankly I'm aware that its probably worthless at this point :( but I love it, and I don't plan on ever selling it.

All in all, with the replaced dial, the watch cost me about $5,100 .... Not too terrible :)

What do you guys think?

You didn't kill the value. You increased the value of the watch. You now have an authentic period correct dial for the watch. Congrats and enjoy your new treasure.

Wow, fantastic. You are very fortunate to have found a correct dial that matches the patina of the hands. Just looking at the photo, you'd never know they weren't paired like that from the factory. I like the insert, too. Even the pearl patina looks as if it matches. That's still a valuable timepiece. You definitely increased the value. Congrats!

Stanley, the watch looks very, very nice. It's always nice to see a vintage Rolex brought back to its original condition.

Enjoy that beauty!

Thanks for the kind words everyone! I guess I was wrong, I always assumed a replaced dial kills the value of a vintage piece, but I guess in this case it was the opposite.

I couldn't be happier with the result, thanks again guys!!!

***SECOND UPDATE***

So it never occured to me to check the dial that was removed (the one that was horribly finished), the watchmaker had returned it to me neatly packed, so today I took a look at the dial that the watch came with and discovered that it was an all PLASTIC dial....

However, everything else checked out, the movement, case, everything was authentic.... But why would someone want to put a horribly faked plastic dial on an authentic Rolex? Seems pretty stupid and pointless if you ask me.

Simple answer: money. Either to save it when replacing the dial for whatever reason, or to make it when selling the watch to an unsuspecting customer.
