DSSD Just to play Devils advocate...
Ok with the exception of a few here, and you know who you are, most of us don’t dive or work on/in the sea. So why the appeal for this watch? It’s new yes, it’s kind of cool looking, but it’s likely to retail for close to 10K U.S. so why are most of us, ok at least 40% of us, ready to plunk down that kind of cash on something that will most likely never see the conditions it was built to endure?
I’m just curious and I’m not really sure myself?!?! My wife likes to point out with a rye smile how obsessed males are over “equipment” and extreme machines/tools. She may have a point and I certainly like owning the best of the best, but it’s not like woman are immune to their connections i.e. designer bags and sparkly jewelry. So is it a male thing, a people thing, a desire to know that we can all fall to the bottom of the ocean during a cruising accident and when they find our body our watch will still be ticking? Thoughts?

I think just because it is so tough. Face it 99% of the oyster watches won't get down below 100 feet. My Sub, er, exuse me, my stolen sub, would have never even gone below 150 feet, more than likely. It's just knowing that it can. Just the equipment syndrome I guess. Same reason a lot of guys drive Hummers.

I am hoping of a US MSRP of $7500 (or less).
It is better to over engineer than to under engineer. I do not "need" a Deepsea watch anymore than I "need" my SD, but I like it and I like the technology, engineering, and research and development that went into it. Now if I can do something about the writing on the stepped rehaut.... Sean

Boys and their toys. Just look how many cars & motorcycles are sold that will do 3x the speed limit...but never do. And the next model's version of "better" always seems to come in the form of yet MORE horsepower.
Panerai has a 2500m watch, and the GP below is good to 3000m. We already pay much more than necessary to sport an ornate timepiece on our wrist, so why not one that performs exponentially beyond our needs? |

It's all about the LOOK.....
If you're hanging with your home boys at the beach, and the best any of them has is a Casio..........but you're sporting that Deep Sea Sea-Dweller. Baby, you are the top dog,....cock-of-the-walk, ..the hot tamale.....the total coolest there.. end of story....

Well, your question is a good one especially at that price point. Most guys do like hi-tech stuff. Just bought a MTM Black Seal rated to 39,000 feet. I like the silicon oil look, heavy case annd bracelet. I might splash some water on it while washing my hands but that's about all. It's a gadget to me. I do think for that kind of money though I would get something better suited to normal activity. Personally, I think this watch will be a major flop if they don't remove the gimmick writing on the bezel before mass production. It looks tacky and very Casio. We all debate the fashion sense of a Sub or SD with a suit but the watches aren't garish. This watch is a pearl that looks like crap. |

It's just vanity, it's knowing we can dive to 12,000FT+ if we needed to. For instance people that drive a Ferrari, when will a normal person on the road need a car that goes 0-60 in 3.5 secs or less? Or a car that can handling on the road like a bread knife into butter? NEVER! Most U.S. highways you can't even drive above 60 mph, Unless you live in a massive land area like Texas, which has towns that are space by many many miles. Locally with me, you can not drive above 55 mph on major highways (L.I.E., B.Q.E, Northern/Southern State Parkways). So again why would I need a watch that can dive that deep? Why would you need a car that goes extremely fast? EGO, that's why! PERIOD!

While we can't buy the best house or maybe even the best car, having the best watch is attainable for many of us. Status? Achievement? Or just a male testosterone thing I don't know, but there is no denying the magnetic-like pull it has on many of us.

+1 To my knowledge most Hyundai's have Honda Motors engines in them, as well as 5 Star Crash test ratings. So You can't use the argument such as, the "Lexus, Mercedes, or BMW is more reliable than the Hyundai." It's just most people do not want to admit they purchase a luxury item for Vanity, because they will appear shallow, vein, etc.

Working on those assumptions, why buy a watch at all? your mobile (Cell) phone will tell the time, Ive said it before its the engineering the cutting edge technology and it is the pride of ownership, amongst a whole host of other things.

Just asking a question mate, not telling everyone to reevaluate their lives or suggesting that we're taking the blue pill, I promise!

Why wasn't this discussion brought up when the Milgauss came back last year? How many of us truly need a watch than can handle strong magnetic fields? Some of us are apparently having sticker shock with the Deepsea, but when the Milgauss came out last year we were all OK with $5k. I believe the issue we all have is with the price plain and simple. We wear a Rolex becasue they look great, make us feel good about ourselves and we all respect the craftmanship that goes into making such a fine piece of jewelry. Let's take a breath and appreciate the new SDDS. Some of us like it, some of us don't, and that is OK.
Thoughts? |

LOL this is pretty true. I will admit if I ran into someone that made a boatload of money and decided to live the Warren Buffet lifestyle, I would have a profound amount of respect for them. It takes balls to do that, have boatload of money and live a no frills lifestyle. I know if I had Warren Buffet money I would life every day like it was my last. I would not have that much resolve and control. So in conclusion to Mr. Buffet I to you!

Truthfully, I hesitated for a long time before getting my SD because, as a diver, I knew it was unnecessary and other divers would know too. My original Sub was just fine with me. But then I got in a motorcycle accident and my Sub got banged up. The watch has a lot of history and I would hate to lose it.
Then, after my divorce, my son came to me and asked me if he could have my Sub some day because he really wanted his Dad's watch. That did it. I decided to retire the watch. By that time, of course, I had started collecting watches and I had three other Subs, a TT Blue, a '65 5512 and a '66 5513. I decided to get the SD because it could take everything I could throw at it and be a worthy replacement for my daily beater. To hell with what the other divers think. Finally, I am one of the few people in the world who can actually say that I have been to the depths these watches are capable of reaching and deeper, even if it was inside a submersible each time. When one wag pointed out on this or another forum that he felt this achievement was insignificant because I did it inside a submersible, I told him to go out and do it himself, and don't forget to stop by the mail buoy in the middle of the ocean to send us a card and let us know how things worked out. The fact is, more people stood on the summit of Mt. Everest in a single day last year than have ever been down to the depth the DEEPSEA is capable of reaching. You can cram more people in to an elevator at Basel 2008 than have ever been below 13,000 feet in the entire history of mankind. But it is still nice to know your equipment can handle it. I would love to have the new DEEPSEA. If anybody ever asked me if I had been 12,900 feet deep, I could honestly say yes. Only a few people would actually know it was not using scuba gear, and there would still be one person every year who would ask me "So, how long did you have to hold your breath?" I kid you not.

My first reply was obviously in jest; there seems to be 2 schools of thought when dealing with excess in anything. One is practicality, do I really NEED this or that? Then there is the other which likes to have the biggest/newest/best/most refined/etc., practicality be damned. Both are entitled to their respective view points and in the end, will show which school of thought they come from with their wallets.

Ego & vanity are great drivers, but is this the real reason?
All men like to assume that they are immortal, hence the need to know that the equipment we use/choose can and will do exactly what our small minds believe we can do

It`s ridiculous to think of Deep Sea as of typical diver`s watch.I know many professional divers and NONE of them ever used neither SD or Breitling Superocean or anything fancy,no,most of them use their Suunto`s or even Citizen Promaster`s.
So,DS is watch for cocky fellows who like to LOOK good, prestigious, but tough(I`m among them,I admit!)! I`m not impressed by DS,but I think that this watch will have an army of admirers, and it`s O.K. to me.
