The "Apps I Recommend" Thread...

Hi All...

I did a brief search looking for a thread re: apps that we have enjoyed downloading for ourselves or for the kids. The free ones are free. You like it, you keep it, you dont like it, you delete it. The ones you pay for might make you hesitate on purchasing because it does involve a cost. I thought might be a great idea to post what various apps people have found useful, educational, plain fun or great distractions for the kids.

I have Apple products...Macbook Pro, iPad Mini with Retina & iPhone 5.

1. Flightradar24 Pro..

Tracks plane activity all over the world.
I'm nerdy that way. I like to watch the planes take off & land. Is kid friendly.

2. Talking Tom.

I'm sure a lot of you know this app. It has been out for a while. Is definitely kid friendly. If you've had some beverages, is hilarious at just the bad words you can make him say. Do it in a foreign language & he'll be the star of your party. Yes, I know is not a mature thing to do..but fun & cheap entertainment.

3. Shift Worker.

Great app for setting your work schedule up. Has different icons & Note colours to keep things organized.

4. Bejeweled & Wordsearch

5. iTranslate, MyLanguagePro & Google Translate

Google Translate is probably the more accurate of the 3 I have. I use them with my non-English speaking patients. Is faster than trying to locate a translator when you need an answer sooner rather than later. Probably good too for foreign travelling.

"seat guru" for flying, I use it a lot if I have last minute flight and it's free. Check out American Airlines 777-300 seating in 1st class Wine tasting and full bar open all the time.

I use a Samsung Phone on Android, so all of these suggestions are based on this. However, I would imagine most are available on the iStore also.

SideSync:
Links my phone to my laptop so that I can control my phone from the laptop screen. The phones screen appears on the laptop. Great for using chat applications, such as Whatsapp, if you are at work. You do not have to hold your phone and can do it all from your laptop screen. Note: This is a Samsung App on Android so may not work with other phone manufacturers.

Ted:
This can be good if your very bored. Lots of very interesting videos of individuals giving talks and lectures.

theChive:
Cool app for quickly passing the time. Lots of cool and fun photos and facts etc.

Shazam:
The greatest app ever made for those times when you really need to know who's singing that song haha.

Judy, I looked up Flightradar24 Pro to download, but at $2.99, I think I'll stick with Flight Aware, which is free.

Wow..great suggestions.

Flightradar is 2.99 in the U.S? Thats a bit pricey. It's 1.99 here. Crazy. I'll check out Flight Aware. :-)

Inventory Droid

Great free database for your phone. You can integrate bar code scans for descriptions and/or pictures as well. Say you have a coin collection or a wine collection. Bar code scanners and integrated database programs cost 100's of dollars, this is free.

I have my entire wine collections categorized and indexed and I can keep track of what I'm consuming and what is ready to drink. Can't beat free!!!

Cam Scanner. Takes a picture of a document & makes it super-crisp & legible.

Fandango. Good for when you want to check movie times when you're out & about

The Chive. Just because...

Pura Vida. For finding Imperial Beer on the go.

Great app but I don't want to know what is getting consumed. I might need therapy if I start tracking it!

I use a Galaxy S5 so all these are in the Google Playstore.

1Password: I use it in conjunction with my Mac Book Pro and iPad mini as a password manager.

https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...ts.onepassword

Swiftkey: Will be included on the next iPhone IIRC, superb swipe keyboard.

https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...htype.swiftkey

Swipepad: Excellent app that keeps my screens clear, I use a hotspot to the top right of my screen to access apps etc, this app alone stops me going back to an iPhone.

https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...ipepad.android

Maildroid: IMHO the best E mail client out there.

https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...=com.maildroid

Photobucket: Excellent, take a picture and it automatically uploads to my account, facility to edit photos also.

https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...bucket.android

Nova and Nova Prime: Great launchers.

https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...oilsw.launcher

Others include Kindle and Tapatalk.

I had a plumber walk out with three bottles of Diamond Creek "Lake" that I had been sitting on for 15 years. Ever since then I inventory everything, and now lock it up even if it's just my wife and I.

Who says plumbers are unsophisticated anyway...

Galaxy Note II here...

Dropbox_+1

CamScanner +1

Whatsapp

Pushbullet - allows you to receive and reply to SMS on your desktop PC

UpTo - calendar app...can sync all your personal calendars but also can load almost any outside date-related item (sporting events, TV shows, holidays etc)

Librivox - 1000s of free (public domain) classic audiobooks (think Invisible Man, Count of Monte Cristo, etc)

K9 Mail - great multi source email client

Kii keyboard - unless you like the swiping style, this is the best keyboard I have used (and I have tried at least 10)

Chromecast - not an app but a wifi enabled dongle that allows multiple apps to stream almost any content to your TV. Best $35 you can spend if you use android.

Rooted Apps
AutomateIt - set up rules for automating tasks (i.e. switch to landscape when opening youtube)

What'sCloud - allows you to receive and reply to whatsapp on your desktop PC

Judy, from the Apple Store check out 'Voice Plus', it should be free and you can record and save voice recordings. There are also "Add Ons" which you can purchase if you want. But it is a lot of fun picking out voice options and then making recordings. Even though it is juvenile fun for us "Adults" you can get quite a few laughs especially as you have stated, after having a few drinks!!!

Wow, just Googled that Marc, the cheapest I could find was eye wateringly expensive. Did you try to recover your loss from him?

Had no proof, it's part of the reason I now have cameras (covered in the other thread) but I made sure to file a police report and put my experience on Angies list. Not sure if you have an equivalent in the UK but in the US Angies list rates and refers contractors and tradesmen. I have a feeling he felt a pinch on the referral end.

flipp for flyers. I'm not sure if this is Canadian or not, but its great for flyers. Circles your choices and saves all your favourites. Concise & easy for price matching too. :-).

Reebee for flyers too.

For Canadians:

Google Maps, love how it gives me an alternate route in bad traffic

Nest, if you have a nest thermostat. It's great to be able to control my house temp when I'm not there.

Marc, I use Apple products. I couldn't find Inventory Droid on my list. Will have to review the few we have or do you know the app by another title?

Is there any kind of app for rating your wine? Like a paper wine journal but online?

FlightAware and PlaneFinderHD (if you're really into it) are the best out there. It's worth the extra bucks.

ShipFinder is also awesome.
