I will get shot down for saying this, but..

The new green deep sea is a good watch, but it's wrong..

Rolex sport watches have allways been generic. There was no 'limited edition' for Hilary, or Fiennes or any explorer. You bought a standard Explorer, or GMT or Submariner and knew that any famous explorer would have the same...

Now we have this new deep sea to celebrate Camerons dive...

Wrong!
Sorry all...

I wouldn't say you are wrong for stating your opinion as opinion not fact. One thing Rolex is and always will be is a marketing giant/genius so whatever sells I guess.

The new Deepsea is not a limited edition. Way I see it is that you can choose now between two dials, as with many other Rolexes. Good for everybody who likes the DS.

Opinions are never wrong or right and I'd like to think in this the worlds greatest forum we are all free to express our opinions.
I agree with you and hope Rolex won't fall into the practice of naming watches after people to me it's a little cheesy and up to this point it's something that has set Rolex apart from other luxury brands

In the past it was usually the enthusiasts (with some help from said marketing machine, Rolex) that assigned names to watches, ie. Newman Daytona or Bond Sub. So I am surprised that they associated a watch to a specific person. I do like the watch however.

I seem to recall saying something like this during the Seaking discussion.

Agree guys!
The old adverts used explorers, yet this watch is promoted as celebrating a dive..
Yes the explorer is marked as being the watch that went up Everest, but they never did a unique dial..
Just think the trend is changing..

Agree. Paneria did a watch named after a polar explorer, it had his name engraved on the back. Not good. This seems similar to me.
And Cameron played a part in designing the watch. Money talks.

I like the fact that there are nicknames for some of the watches that's kind of cool.

Well, actually, the Explorer style watch never did go to the top of Everest.

Hilary and Norgay wore Oyster Perpetuals to the top of Mt. Everest and the Explorer was introduced to commemorate that event, as the new DSSD dial has been issued to commemorate the Deep Sea Challenger dive.

Good point. But one wore a Smiths..
But it was. Launch of a whole new watch. And the explorer was the first sports/tool watch...

While I'm likely a loser for not previously knowing this, the only way I knew who James Cameron is was by reading this forum. He means nothing to me so now I see his name in the Rolex website and I'm like....?

Now Jacques Cousteau, that's a name.

what, exactly, did cameron 'do' that would merit such an individual association?

im serious, btw...should they eventually have a space-dweller for richard branson?

What's interesting is 99% of people who enjoy James Cameron's movie have probably never heard of Jacques Cousteau...

He risked his life going down in a sub to the deepest point in the ocean. Seems like a tiny note worthy endeavor...

But I guess in todays world of mediocre crap..It doesn't mean anything to many....I guess he should have ran a couple of touchdowns or had a hit song

Also, Rolex has done some limited releases. COMEX sub?

sigh...
any other model anyone not like.

Sometimes I wonder about all the negative opinions and why they need to be put out in the open. Isn't there a black Deepsea too enjoy still, not to mention that the Deepsea D-Blue isn't a limited edition. Rolex has done similar in the past, nothing new.
If you don't like it, you don't like it, cool. I just don't think we need threads pointing out what people don't like all the time. Lots of Rolexes I dislike but hey I just don't buy them and when someone posts a thread on one, I may comment on my negative opinion if it serves a purpose in evaluating the watch. For example, one might comment in a Deepsea thread that the reason they didn't buy it was because it felt top heavy or unbalanced, making the watch uncomfortable for them on their wrist. This might be a useful consideration to someone of similar wrist type.

Meh, maybe I'm just getting old. It's good when you open a thread and learn something whether opinion or not, but its no fun when it seems like just someone thinking out loud.

I got the book but will have to check for the letter. Most people know James Cameron as a blockbuster film director (terminator, avatar, etc...) but what people don't know are his vast contributions to the scientific community. He is fortunate enough to be able to fund his expeditions and has helped create new technology to explore parts of our planet where only two other people have gone before. He is a bonafide National Geographic Explorer and has risked his life for the furtherance of scientific study. Plus I think the watch is cool as $h!t.

Nope, The D-Blue is sort of special right now, so they give you special like things. I'm guessing the book is also specific to the D-Blue recounting some the details and history of Cameron's dive, stuff like that.
However, having said that, a good AD will likely do the same when you buy a watch from them anyways and give you hand outs, pamphlets, pens, etc.....so the answer is yes...and no. Hope that makes sense.
