At an independent watchmaker, but sourcing the parts will be difficult and expensive.
I don't really see the point in doing it though.

Oh, hell no! If you want a Platona buy a Platona.
I'm getting out of here before the flamethrowers come out. |

I personally would not do it. Looks like that one was done is Abu Dhabi, if I recall correctly there is a guy doing it in Bahrain as well.

A nice Franken Rolex is always a nice Rolex so long you use orignal parts and don't sell it and is open with the mods.

If you get it in your hand you can tell by the weight, at the pic you can't.

Well .. To be honest, if the owner is happy why not ?
I personally wouldn't, because I'd feel like it'll lose its charm feeling may it be precious metal or Ss , As long as ure happy, wear in good health looks beautiful to me |

Sure you can buy it and also get a nice Ferrari or Lamborghini kit car and look like you are the man but save tons of dough.

My only concern is when the mods make it look the same as a different model, hence here and like, or WG dial and bezel on an SS sub, to me it's trying to be something it's not! |

I dont see it being like a kit car personally, it is still a Rolex with genuine parts, the issue is it is pretending to be something it is not. Personally I would not do it, but have no issues with those that do it.

I would only change the dial so at least it is obvious to any WIS that this is an SS modded Daytona. Changing the bezel too smacks of deception and trying to show off something you don't have. Either you want to be a TRFer or an IGer.

Some of you think it's to show something you don't have when you made a franken watch. Most normal people don't
know anyway what you have so that is not a problem IMHO. I love to made my own models and what say Rolex is right when they made a model only in precious metals? So more franken watches to the people.

Franken is one thing, but I must say that I highly doubt anyone could source an original Platona dial and bezel. The bezel looks darker than on the real thing and the dial doesn't look genuine either (a bit too sunburst-y), so imo this is a different proposition altogether than just a franken.

The dial does not look genuine to me though. The placement of the subdials all look correct being slightly off center from the 3 and 9 markers, but the thickness of the brown ring on the subdials looks too think and the font is much too thick as well. The pictures are low res and not from the greatest angle, but my thought would be that this is a genuine watch with an aftermarket dial. The bezel is up in the air as the pictures are not good enough to see the small details clearly enough. As far as mistaking this watch for the real deal, the case lugs and end links are different between the SS and precious metal models which is an immediate giveaway as well as the black bezel. Also the SS models is much lighter. On an old mechanical scale, my 116520 weighed in at 5oz total and my 116509 weighed 7.5oz. The white gold Daytona weighs 50% more than it's SS counterpart. 950 Platinum is slightly more dense than gold in any color so the weight difference between steel and platinum would be even more than that of gold. On a side note, I am also not aware of Rolex making a black ceramic bezel that would fit the modern Daytona either making that bezel aftermarket as well. I may be wrong on that though so if I am, somepne please correct me. |
