What would you prefer? 5512 Gilt or 1680 Red?

5512 PCG Gilt in early 60s without date...or
1680 Red in early 70s with date...

Both are on OEM strap only, no bracelet, watch conditions are similar...

Any thoughts please?

Cheers

Another big fight match between two references. Lol. This is a tough one. I would lean towards gilt if condition is excellent especially the dial. There will be no more rolex like that made. Even though red sub is equally awesome they r not rarer than the gilt.

There is something about rolex gold on black that is so captivating.

Gilt by a mile. Any gilt. Chapter ring and pcg gilt? No contest at all.

I think among collectors gilt will win assuming condition.

well, I have a red 1680, and not a gilt 5512, so that's my answer.

Choose the one that sings to you. Both are (potentially) expensive toys, so buying one just from our opinions might end up disappointing you. If you get bitten, like many of us have, you'll want the one you didn't get anyway :-)

Both are fantastic references. Maybe the 5512 is a bit more of a "jungle" to enter. There are just so many variants. 2 line, 4 line, chapter ring, no chapter ring, pointed crown guards, normal crown guards. From what you've written it's a PCG, which would definitely be my preference. Also, if you can, chapter rings are a thing of beauty.

Also, the radium glossy dials are harder to find in nice condition than the reds and thus they command a much higher premium. Some prefer the patina on tritium to that on radium.

5512 of course. Doesn't even seem like a fair contest IMO.

I'll go against the mainstream and vote for the red Sub.

I like having the date, and the bit of red text on the dial just works for me.

Gilt would be my choice. Love the way a no-date dial looks, especially the gilts.
