Rolex: Label for Snobs?
Someone started a thread about why people hate Rolexes.
OK. Rolex is a brand. Some people buy brands because they like the kudos of the label rather than the quality of the engineering or the classic design. I love Rolex, but I admit it does disappoint me when I see a Rolex worn as a brand, rather than as a classic, quality timepiece. Anyone else? |

About your topic now: Nick, marketing is everywhere! Rolex IS a status brand as well (among upper middle class mostly; not the really rich though). You can't avoid the "status effect" = the richer people making a "statement" to those below them. Also the "bandwagon effect" = I am wearing Rolex cause my peers (same as I) do. The "Snob" effect is when you are wearing smth rare. I wouldn't say this for Rolex anymore. Cheers

I don't get it. Are you talking about snobs or label queens?

Exactly. Snob is smth else; this is more like the "bandwagon effect" or "keeping up with the Joneses".
Rolex is NOT that expensive to indicate real SNOBBERY.

Gee, I didn't know there was a "proper" way to wear your rolex, or a pre-determined tightness or looseness standard for the bracelet, or an etiquette for what other jewelry you can or cannot wear with your watch. I think if you've made the commitment to own such a fine timepiece, you should wear it however it makes you happy. I wear my bluesy every day, whether I'm in a suit in meetings or in leather twisting the throttle on my bike. And I appreciate the quality, style, and durability of my watch, and I couldn't give a hang for anyone's perception of snobbery or poor taste. Wear your watch in happiness and good health.
Cheers |

I'm not covered in brands, but I suspect this might be too "loose" for some...

I wear a Rolex simply because I am not happy with any other brand. I went years without a Rolex. I tried another brand and didnt like it. I sold it and a few thou more saved and I got the LV. Snobbery can take many forms so I don't think it's a "Rolex" thing all by itself.

I wear a Rolex for many reasons (maybe a bit for impressing others as well - difficult to separate all these motives...)
But the main reason is that is is a handsome, high-quality, rugged watch. I feel fine with it at work, when socialising, travel, when I am alone in the sea or on the top of a mountain....everywhere

If one's a snob, then that is not simply because one wears a Rolex but because it might be one's personality and a whole lot of other factors, including how much one stick's (or doesn't stick) his/her Rolex in other people's faces.
In other words, Rolex alone doesn't make anyone a snob, IMHO, but one's character, ideas, treatment of others, outlook, attitude, etc. all determine it. (Does that mean I'm a snob????) |

I can't help it but my attitude gets a little out of hand when I wear my Rolex. I guess the best way to describe it is with a picture:
Does this make me a snob, or a bad person? |

A definition...
A snob, guilty of snobbery, is a person who adopts the worldview that some people are inherently inferior to him/her for any one of a variety of reasons including real or supposed intellect, wealth, education, ancestry, etc. Often, the form of snobbery reflects the offending individual's socio-economic background. For example, a common snobbery of the affluent is the affectation that wealth is either the cause or result of superiority, or both as in the case of privileged children. However, a form of snobbery can be adopted by someone not a part of that group; Pseudo-intellectual is a type of snob. Such a snob imitates the manners, adopts the world-view and affects the lifestyle of a social class of people to which he or she aspires, but does not yet belong, and to which he or she may never belong.I think there is, if we are being honest with ourselves, an element of snobbery, given the above definition, in all of us, at one time or another.

Oh hell, of course I'm a snob and I've never been reticent about that. Well before I put on my first Rolex, I had no compunction about telling stupid people to stop wasting my time, and I've yet to see a good reason for changing that practice.

Not snobbery, just using time well
Quote:
i do not agree that telling 'stupid' people to stop wasting your time is being a snob. it just makes sense, because 'stupid' or not some people WILL waste your time. Since I SELL my time, I am especially sensitive to people who waste it...i love it when people call me and say, 'I just need a minute' of your time. My phone system counts the minutes...usually it's more like 20 minutes, and I charge em for that time. Carries over to my personal life as well. Can't be wasting precious time. So,you do not meet the definition of a snob, defined elsewhere in this post. best, dan |

the others who labeled us as snobs are wrong or are simply envious. from the part of this world i am from, almost everyone is crazily status seeking (typical of asians) but still there are quite some whom, they deemed themselves to be more refined, as they wear AP, GP, PP, etc.. and labeled us rolex wearers are tasteless and loud. I had my 1st rolex in high school n a few more later n i had even given my wife a lady president rolex as a wedding gift as i know it is something that she will appreciate and will last a long time. my opinion is that we buy and wear what we want and not to prove to them. so, as long as we are happy with our rolexes, they all can go n fly kite. |

I'm definitely a snob when it comes to watches. Too many people, especially in my part of the world (a statement of the most general nature as I make no proprietary claim whatsoever on that much real estate) are on the watch-mania bandwagon.
I mean, tonight for example, out to dinner and friends were wearing a Roger Dubuis and a JLC Reverso Squadra, both limited editions and both timepieces were selected for their exclusivity and 'cool' serial numbers. I couldn't connect with these people although they definitely wanted to talk about watches because they know I like the damn things (and I say damn in the nicest possible and ironic way). I desperately strove to turn the conversation to business, politics, gossip, anything but watches, because I couldn't simply connect with people who buy watches simply because of perception, marketing and numerology. |
