Submariner 16800 Matte Dial Variations
I just picked up a 16800 and was wondering if thier are different types of matte dials like on other models.
Mine has a 7.4 million serial number. |

Yes, there is. I believe there are three variations of the 16800 matte dial. The Mk1 dial has a shorter coronet than yours. Never was sure what the differences are between MK2 and Mk3. Hopefully an expert will chime in.

So based on this it looks like I have an MK 3.
The alignment of the L and the coronet are different on the MK 1. The MK 2 and 3 are very similar but the alignment of 1000 Looks different as does the length of the f in ft. The MK 4 coronet is thicker and the fonts for ft and m are different. What did I miss? |

This is a great post.
I did notice that the < symbol appears differently in each of the photographs. To my eye: Mk I < appears to be flatter Mk II & Mk III < open end same height as the 2 with a space between the < and the 2 (I suspect there could be some distortion in the Mk III picture that makes the < look like it is touching the minute marker) Mk IV < appears not to be vertically aligned with the minute marker, like the previous variants and that it is actually closer to the 2 Comparing with all of the other notes I am going to say this is a Mk IV Dial. Please put me straight on what I might have missed. Is there a publication out there that details all of the dial section differences? My 8,29 Mil dial and individual parts |

charlie3755 in my eyes your dial is most likely a mark 3. look at the L in rolex and the crown of sample above its the same but when you compare to mark 4 you letters are much thinner

I have Matt dial 16800 with 7.4 mil serial and original paper dated 1983. Anyone expert could help to identify which mark version is my dial? I have not worn it for long time and always in safe for all the time, you can see the patina is delevoping quite nicely :).
Thanks in advance for your comments. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Looks like a MK IV. The font for the "ft" is the tell for me.
Nice watch, congrats! |

Hi all,
Any views as to which of all of these is most desirable from a collectors point of view (and get all 4 is not a valid answer) |
