Saphire case back RO Chrono?

I recently went to a watch fair where i chatted with the people in the AP booth.

I tried the RO Chrono ref. 26320 on and asked why the watch has a solid case back instead of a saphire case back as most other RO models.
The kind woman gave me an explanation on why and added, that AP is currently working on a new caliber for the RO Chrono which will have saphire case back.

Do any of you know anything about this new caliber and a possible saphire case back for the RO Chrono ?

It's because the movement is a modified F. Piguet 1185, not an in-house movement. They only use open case backs on watches with fully in-house calibers, like the ROO and 15400.

As far as a new movement being made for the ROC, I've heard those rumors for some time too, but no idea if we'll see it anytime soon. Enjoying my 26320 too much to care!

Yes that is true. AP is working on it's own entirely integrated in-house chrono movement. I was also told of this during my visit to La Brassus. As to when it will be released, no confirmation yet but I will think "soon" which can means Baselworld 2015, fingers crossed.

15202 Jumbo would be an exception to this rule though, right?

AP usually launch new models at SIHH, in January each year.

That's actually a really good point. Is the Jumbo the only exception?

AP actually has used a sapphire caseback on some models with a non-inhouse movement. Others have mentioned the Jumbo, but the other ones that spring to mind are the Dubail RO Chrono and the Montoya ROO.

Entirely in-house movement is what I've been waiting for in the ROC.
When it happens, I'm in.

While in-house would be nice the caliber 2385 in the ROC is a great workhorse.

Perhaps more reliable than the in-house ones?

Nice looking too.

It's a JLC movement, but AP is one of the original co-developers. My recollection is that when AP sold its 40% interest in JLC in 2000, AP acquired the exclusive rights to the movement. The 15202 that was subsequently released that year had an open case back. The regular series jumbo before then always had a solid case back.

Re: the new novelties...I find it hard to swallow paying $23k for a modular chrono movement which is not fully in house.
