Graves Supercomplication

Any guesses on where this one will sell today?

Low-end estimate is about $15m, but with all the hype the watch has gotten coupled with the owner dying yesterday (which sort of adds to the story), I think it will hit $18m.

What do you guys think?

By the way, I love how the COMMISSION was nearly $4M!!! Just that alone would go down as one of the most expensive watches ever sold. Unreal.

I haven't heard it publicly stated yet. Hodinkee said they'd update their site with more info soon.

I wouldn't be shocked if it was either an anonymous bidder or it was purchased for the Patek museum. Would be very surprised if a single collector bought on their own AND is willing to let people know their name.

Heard it was Aureal Bacs (former head of Christie's watch department). could be buying for a client....

If the former head of Christie's watch department has $24m to spend on a watch, I need to get into the auction business

And I'm specifically talking about him purchasing it for himself... I assume it was for a client as well.

if you had a spare $25mm to spend on a watch, would you really want to be crammed into a room and have everyone watch as you bid $20mm? especially from a security point of view. Hire one of the top watch experts in the world, have him inspect the watch and give his blessing, and have him bid for you as a proxy. throw him a measly $100k for his time...

I'm guessing that everyone knows what the watch looks like, correct?

No pic, it didn't happen?

I think they were just settling a debt from its previous owner who owed them 80+million. They likely didn't receive the entire commission, and in the auction business they seldom get the whole commission anyway because they often have to give consignors MORE than the hammer price just to get them to consign.

They have the actual video of the auction taking place? Do you have a link? Need to see that!

according to this article the watch was last wound in 1969 and is still ticking! Not sure if I believe it, a 45 year power reserve is impressive!

I read a similar article. I also watched a video of the watch working. I think the article meant "serviced" not wound.

It was posted on Instagram by someone attending the auction. It was just a clip of the last bid and the auctioneer banging his hammer and announcing it being sold while the whole room burst into applause and turned to the winning bidder, Aurel Bacs who was holding up his auction paddle #674.

Yes I don't think the actuale buyer would want people to know who he is, except if he is 24/7 with 10+ bodyguards, but even like this I woulldn't want anyone to know I have it

Aurel Bacs bought it on behalf of the Stern family.. allegedly. He was the one holding up paddle #674. Hammered at 20.6 CHF but Sotheby's refused a bid of 20.65 CHF. Very interesting they took the underbid...
