Dear USPS, what the hell is this?

Well this is an interesting situation.

I've shipped many things over the years with USPS, watches and others.
But this is the first time they've done THIS to me!

Sold a nice gentleman my Panerai Pam 025 and shipped with 2 day priority mail, full insurance mind you.
The package shows up to his door looking like this! The outside of the box covered in some sort of oily liquid!

Quite glad that the contents weren't affected in any way, (thank goodness I added plenty of extra packing around the wood Panerai box)

But this is ridiculous!!!

It looks like it was tossed on the ground of a car shop and rubbed around in some of the oil drippings.

I'll be switching to Fedex+parcelpro in the future. This is enraging.

Luckily not! I was actually skyping him when I packed it up, so he knew I did a good job with it and the box was nowhere close to than condition when I sent it.

He's quite annoyed with USPS too.

Holy cow. Looks like it spent some time on the tarmac.

I sort of understand Grady's point here.

Having worked for a few years during college at the USPS on loading docks, as mailhandler, bagging, loading/unloading trucks/trains, etc. The thing is this - some other guy's 40 pound poorly packed box of oily cr^p that burst open when it landed on top of yours coming down a chute probably caused the damage to your properly packed box.

This is why ParcelPro and other 3rd party shipping insurers demand double boxing to protect the goods inside.

Hard to blame the shipper for other guys who don't properly pack boxes, ship messy liquids, etc...

Looks bad. But as long as item arrived without damage or delay, that certainly helps.

I ship some stuff using USPS one time that looked like could have been run over by the mail truck when it was delivered.

glad the contents were safe though ,, its nearly at the point of shipping things in a peli case or the likes , then shipping an empty case bach , trouble is that a nice shipping case attracts attention too.
not easy these days.

I have received mail returned to me that was covered with crud. Come to find out someone had tossed a bottle of oil in a mail box as a prank. Not always the post office's fault.

I tend to think some sort of contact (phone call/note) from the carrier is appropriate in a case like that. If I was the shipping supervisor I wouldn't be happy for a customer to get that in the mail.

I'll see about recommending this to him. But nothing was broken, and no insurance will need to be filed; I'm doubtful USPS will care.

You're right, they won't. At best you'll just get an apology.

FedEx or bust :)

Nah. More like a dumbfounded look of 'we couldn't possibly have done anything like that.'

I once shipped Fed ex to RSC ( ignoring their instruction about registered mail). It was of course refused. The box came back half open crushed and damaged. Luckily the watch was still inside and no damage.

Reluctant to ever ship a watch. If that's what the box looks like imagine what shocks it may have been subjected to that don't even leave a trace...

Hehe, someone once told me that the USPS takes all the boxes marked fragile, and they throw them into a very special machine, somewhat like a clothes dryer, but for boxes containing damageable items.
After about 15 minutes in the machine the postmen decide they've had their fun, and then put it on the truck for delivery.

This is why I shy away from writing fragile on the box
